I got a 1430 on my SAT with a perfect 8 in all categories for the essay. I got a 710 on my Japanese subject test, a 750 on Math 2, and a 750 on US History. I am an officer of Future Problem Solvers Club, a junior officer for my school’s NHS chapter, an officer of a Math tutoring program at my local library, a member of a club that throws birthday parties for underprivileged children, and a member of the lacrosse team. I have a 3.85 GPA weighted and 3.64 unweighted. I make short films in my spare time, and I have a 3D art portfolio. What are my chances in getting into these schools’ film programs?
Do you take AP classes? Your SAT is a little low. I would look at Wesleyan, if you didnt take any AP’s, you would only have a small chance. But if your school doesnt offer AP, I am not seeing anything here that showed you challenged yourself in classes.
Obviously these schools require applicants to have taken a rigorous curriculum.
Your portfolio will be incredibly important at USC, and in some cases (not all, so have back-ups) it will trump a GPA on the lower side, so don’t give up hope! Be sure your portfolio is polished and try to get feedback on its content from professionals. Good luck!
I think the most potentially damaging factors of your application is your GPA (which shows that you didn’t take AP classes and avoided rigorous courses) and your ECs (all of which alone seem cool and great, but have no real purpose toward showing your passions as a filmmaker). Does your school offer a lot of AP classes? If there are other students with the same issue of not having the opportunity to take rigorous courses, you may have a shot.
