Which school do you guys think has a better film/media studies program? Also if you guys know how much emphasis the programs put on production or which one will look better on a transcript when applying to grad school, that would be very helpful too!

I think your best bet is too look at the course offerings for each program. You may find that one school or both don’t offer “technical” or how to classes and are generally more theory in the sense that you learn about it like you would learn about “art” in terms of history not necessarily practice.
I know that UCSD has a major that has to do with the practice of, instead of theory.

But if you’re interested in theory, I’ve heard about UCI’s program as being good. Haven’t heard anything about UCSB.

But dont you think that starting out at a critical studies level can well prep you to go on to a production program for grad school?

This is a link to a Los Angeles Times article about the UCSB film program. IMHO, it sounds a bit long on the ideology and short on…well…read the article and see for yourself:
[Lights, Camera, Action. Marxism, Semiotics, Narratology. - Los Angeles Times](http://articles.latimes.com/2003/jul/13/magazine/tm-filmschool28)

hahahha…that article was funny. Im from UCSB and I had a very good college experience there. I never took any film study classes, but I knew many theater majors from UCSB who were really good at directing and acting in plays. They were probably the best plays that I have ever seen. I know film and theater are very different, but if the theater major is that good I would assume may be the film studies has a similar spice to it. I could be wrong.

I knew one Phd. student from the film studies major who was one of the smartest guys I have ever met. His research is very creative and has an interdisciplinary connection with media studies.

I think there are some teachers in every major that kill you with dry content. I was an accounting major from SB, and I had a couple of classes in my major which made me hate life for a quarter or two.

Sometimes visiting professors come for a couple of quarters and they bring stuff out of their a** to torture kids. We had a visiting professor from USC who made us stop liking accounting for a couple of months, so it depends. I would go talk to the professors and get an idea of how the whole department is. If you get the feeling that the article is right about the film studies major at UCSB, then by all means please don’t go to UCSB.

But explore a little bit more, it won’t hurt you.

i have the same concern =[ so which one did u ended up going to?
