Film Production Major

My son wants to major in Film Production, but with limited financial resources, is avoiding obvious choices of NYU, USC, etc; what are suggestions for universities, east of the Mississippi, offering a strong film production major, preferably urban setting?

What state do you live in? Check to see if your state schools offer Film Production as a major in Literature, Science and Arts. Some do.

UNC-Wilmington www.uncw.edu/filmstudies

We live in Virginia. Yesterday he visited UNC?Wilmington; the cap on the out of state students is limiting but otherwise looks good. VCU, Temple are on his list. Looking into University of Pittsburg and their affiliation with Pittsburg Filmmakers for production-just wish we had begun this process last year instead of waiting until senior year to be doing all this research! But thanks for help!

I know you are looking east of the Mississippi but you may find this thread interesting on the Colorado Film School:

Also check the Visual Arts and Film Majors forum.

Some schools offer Film Studies and some offer Film Production, along with screenwriting, etc. But, he may not be interested in Film Studies.

I just responded on your other post about VCU too. Just wanted to add that Ohio University has a top film program and is fairly reasonable cost wise OOS. Has he looked at Emerson in Boston?

^ A heads up, to study film at Ohio U you must be in the Honors Program.

Emerson rep will be in the area later this month so we will plan to go to the presentation. Will look further into Ohio, thanks for all advice!

Ohiomom, good to know! thx for adding that crucial detail :)

My D loved Emerson too. It’s right across the street from Boston Commons! Loved this campus too, although it’s not exactly a campus in the traditional sense.

If cost is an issue, my advice would be look for schools with good merit-aid, such as Chapman in CA, which I know it’s not east of the Mississippi, but for internships and jobs, and connections, you’ll have a better chance.

RIT or RPI if he’s more interested in the technical aspects; Ithaca, Emerson, Pitt, and even Syracuse.
