Film production-public schools

Any advice on public options and their quality? We can't afford private options and many are high reaches for my daughter.

Where are you located? I know several kids at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. It is fairly easy to get in and is the first choice for some of the more artistic kids. Another friend’s son just graduated from UTexas-Arlington and really liked it there.

We are in Washington State. We haven’t been to Central Washington to visit yet, but I wasn’t sure about the reputation of the program or outcome. She really wanted to go to LA but Loyola and Chapman are out of reach competition-wise and financially. She wants to keep her options open and study and get exposed to other areas of interest. But films are her passion (for now!). We’ve heard you have to be in LA to be in the film biz, but I was hoping she might be able to get an internship there regardless of where she goes to school. Other affordable options include U of Montana and McDaniel, but again, I don’t know what the quality of the film programs is. Maybe, if it is anywhere but LA, it’s a toss up.

If she’s willing to come to the east coast, UNC Wilmington has a good Film Studies program. Check it out. Wilmington is home to Screen Gems studios, the largest on the east coast.
The new Iron Man 3 movie is set to start production there soon. TV series Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill were filmed/produced in Wilmington.

Look at Evergreen State. It is well regarded for film school and might have financial aid that will help. It is not as selective academically.

Take look at Univ of New Mexico innovative Interdisciplinary Film & Digital Media program (IFDM).

[UNM College of Fine Arts: IFDM Program](http://finearts.unm.edu/ifdm.htm)

It offers a BFA in film production and has a $1M digital media production facility that opened in 2010 (And which Joss Whedon used to do the motion capture and green screen work for The Avengers.) Students intern in the local TV and film production companies. (Which produce cable TV shows like Breaking Bad and In Plain Sight.)

One of older Ds friends studied film @ WWU.
