Film Program and Study Abroad Questions

Hi, I'm a rising senior this year in high school in MD and really looking at Pitt and Penn State. Im looking to go into film production (NOT film studies) and I am just not sure which school is the better pick. I want a big school with good surroundings and I am very much a city girl, so Penn State seems boring to me. But I've heard that it is a COLLEGE town, so I am ready and willing to give it a shot, 13 people went to Penn State out of the graduating class of '10 from my school this year- the third highest attending school behind our state and community colleges. Everybody loves it, so I hope I will too. But I also have a very strong possibility of going to Pitt.

So basically, it's boiled down to a) which college has the better film program, and b)which environment I like better. (I visit both campuses in a few weeks).

Also, a factor is the study abroad program both schools offer. I want to go to London and really have no interest in any other city. Penn State only allows you to travel based on what program you're in, so for Film, I could only go to Prague (not that Im complaining, but I would much rather be in London). For Pitt, I could go to London and take a British Broadcasting class - I think. Also, it seems as if the living situation is better for Pitt's program.

Bottom line: Based your collective knowledge (I really need advice on this), which do you think has the better Study Abroad program and Film Program?

Thank you so much!

I see you haven’t gotten any response so I’ll offer one piece of advice-- Be sure and set up appointments with someone in each film department so you can get specific information and not just the more general “rah-rah Pitt/PSU” orientation. I know PSU has a student film festival each spring; you could get hold of a dvd and see what kind of work students are doing.

Also, State College is pretty quiet in the summer; you would get a better sense of campus life during the school year, so maybe you could schedule another visit if you don’t cross it off your list after your visit next month.
