Film Program

Does anyone have any information on the film program? How comprehensive, reputation, etc.?

I didn’t even know we had a film program… The arts here aren’t very big to be honest.

it’s called cinema major not film.

you’ll learn lots more than just film making.

senior projects I’ve seen range from animation to “angry young editor” to interview documentary to guerrilla projects.

there is also a videography club and more.

have you checked out the web site? [Binghamton University - Academics: Schools and Colleges: Harpur College of Arts and Sciences: Degree Programs: Cinema](http://cinema.binghamton.edu)

Thanks, I have looked at the website. I was wondering if anyone has an impression of the program–how does it compare to other colleges, such as Ithaca, Syracuse, American?

I’m actually thinking about minoring in cinema and also get involved in the film / media / video related club. Honestly, I’ve never heard about Binghamton’s cinema program before until I decided to apply to this school four months ago – heard some good things about Ithaca and Syracuse’s film programs when I was in high school though.

My son is a double major in cinema and anthropology. He transferred from American U in DC, primarily for the cost - in other words, what he was getting for the money in his chosen majors wasn’t worth the cost of American U.

The cinema program at Bing is small, there is no doubt about that. But, according to my son, solid. He also feels that with the smaller program/less students/smaller classes, their is a hell of a lot more attention given to each student. He has been wowed by his profs thus far and has been adequately challenged. The equipment/facilities are limited, but good, and always available.

When he knew that he wanted to transfer out of American, he looked at a number of schools in the Suny system. We are closer to Buffalo, and Buffalo had a very intriguing film program, but since he is a double major, he felt the Anthro program at Bing trumped all others, so Bing it was.

I hope my limited post helps somewhat! The best of luck to you going forward :)

Thanks very much. At this point, we are strongly considering American, so this is very informative. We’re going on Monday for the day, so I will wait till after the visit to tell my daughter about your son’s impressions.

Are there other reasons that he was not happy with American (besides the cost)? Also, how long did he stay there?
