Film School Admission

Planning to apply, but they said at the tour they don't accept portfolios because they want an even playing field. I personally think that is stupid, because you may have a kid who is really good, but doesn't get in because he couldn't use his/her work to get them in. Oh well, anyone who knows anything about the film school, please help!

Were you on a general tour? The admission for film school is totally separate, very competitive, and is separate from general admission to FSU. It is a limited access program which you apply to in addition to the general admission. Did you visit the film school department?

They will narrow the field down based on the application materials, and then interview about 50-60 students. I believe that at that time you will have the opportunity to submit your work. I believe there are about 15 slots available for freshman admissions. I suspect they have over 1000 applicants.

They can tell who they want to interview. Then you can wow them with your work. I think that there is little time to evaluate 1000 portfolios. But your work will be evaluated if you make the cut.

Search the FSU board there are other posts from last year and the year before, including threads with posts from those who made it to the interview.

Thanks sunny. Yes, I went on the tour of the Film school, and LOVED it. I actually got a chance to speak face to face with the Dean, and he was a great guy, real down-to-earth. I plan to attend there for film school, but I’m just nervous about the possibilityof not getting in…so basically I want to do EVERYTHING I POSSIBLY CAN to further ensure my sucess.

Good luck!

I’m on the other side of this issue about the not submitting portfolios. I don’t have many films I made, and the ones I do have are on a computer harddrive somewhere at school from 2 years ago, so its probably deleted and gone and lost. Because I didn’t really think I’d get into film then. And the films I made weren’t that good, and I can improve some of them, but some of them I can’t because I can’t reshoot them since I’m not in the film class. So if we got all the way to the interview stage they might just reject me then. Whats worse is that I only have a digital camera with video and no tripod and basic editing equipment. It sucks.

So I was wondering if there was a chance of me getting in, since I had lots of writing and art classes, good grades and sats, what I think is a good essay, and two good letters of recomendation (based on my relationships with the teachers). Does a letter of recomendation have to be from a film teacher, or would an art teacher suffice? I only had film 2 years ago and I don’t think she remembers me.

Anyway, those are all my problems that make it very unlikely that I’ll get into the film school.

You’ll have zero chance if you don’t take action to find out. Visit the school, ask your questions.
