Film school chances?

I'm a senior in high school, and my GPA was just recently lowered due to an overwhelming junior year. In freshman and sophomore years, my grades were mostly A's with some B's. In junior year, my grades were mostly C's with a couple of B's. My GPA fell from a 3.8 to a 3.1 in one year. I took all honors courses last yer with one AP. It was history, and I got a 3 on the exam. My SAT scores were 1930 with writing. I am signed up for SAT II's, but I haven't taken them yet. I plan on taking the SAT's again as well.

I am heavily involved in the film program at my school. We have something called an 'Arts Academy', which is somewhat of a separate institution in our school. You need to apply every year, space is limited, and you need to apply to it separately when applying to my school in general. I have been in this program since its inception, and I produce about six short films every year. Two have been admitted into a student film festival two consecutive years. I have received honors such as 'Best Screenwriter' and 'Best Editing' in my school. I also play sports, both football and indoor and outdoor track. I am also in Habitat for Humanity, and I also am involved in the tech side of theatrical productions.

As far things I do outside of school, I have participated in the 48 Hour Film Festival, making the 'Best of' DVD. I am also a volunteer and student jury member in the Rhode Island Film Festival. I have written ten screenplays to back up my seven short films, and all we be put into my portfolio.

My first question is can I bring my GPA back to where it once was before junior year?

My second question is if I can get into colleges such as NYU Tisch program or Emerson. Both would be considered my top choice.

It took a year to bring down, so I assume it would take a year to bring back up. Honestly, I have no idea what your chances are, since I’ve never seen your films. Wouldn’t admissions directors for film school care more about the quality of your cinematic work than whether or not you got a B in calculus? Based on your school involvement, you seem to have a great interest in film-making, and you must be good to keep being re-admitted to your school program. Good luck, bro. -T

NYU Tisch is an EXTREMELY selective school - considered the BEST art school in the US. It’s already hard enough for a student with a perfect GPA and perfect stats to get in. But, while keeping that in mind, it also highly depends on your artistics skills. Are your films GOOD ENOUGH for Tisch? Now, what tom8 said is true - your films must be good if you keep on being re-admitted to the Arts Academy at your school, so, if your films actually ARE good, then your chances should be pretty good. Of course, they also look at your grades and stats. If you want them to take you more seriously, you should bump up your SAT score by a lot - that’ll probably divert their attention from your low GPA to your perfect SAT score  But…then again, junior year is the year colleges look at the MOST. Just try to get your GPA up by senior year. Also think about EDing at NYU, if FA is not needed.
