Film school difficulty

How hard is it to get accepted into the NYU film school? I am an out of state applicant, with limited experience, other than making a few shorts. I am from a community college, and have a 3.3 gpa. Is it even worth it for me to apply? What do they look for? What are my odds?

(1) Tisch is the best art school of its type in the country. So it’s not easy to gain admissions to Tisch. Tisch will be most concerned with your portfolio - i.e. what it is that you have done and how well you have done it.

(2) Your GPA is low. The NYU average GPA for incoming freshmen for all four-year programs is an A-. For reference, a B+ is a 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, while an A- is a 3.7 on a 4.0 scale. That said, your GPA should be around 3.5 to be considered “good”.

So don’t bother?

I wouldn’t worry. Concentrate on your portfolio. My son got accepted his ACT was 26. No IB or AP. His avg. was 88% so whatever that translates to a GPA. Your portfolio is where you will shine!!!

Thank you! I was honestly getting to the point where I wasn’t even going to try. I applied at FSU for their film program, but I think that one may have just been a joke. They don’t allow any portfolio work, and on resume/paper, I don’t look nearly as good as most applicants. Glad to hear NYU cares about work. I’m going for it!
