Hey guys! I'm new to the forum (as you may or may not have noticed haha) and I just wanted to start by saying hello to everyone out there!

My question is in reguards to the film school at FSU.My name is John, I'm 23, and I've recently discovered my passion for filmmaking and story telling, and for the last year I have been longing to go to a school that I feel can help me make this dream a reality! I've taken all of the film courses available here at the local University (University of Louisiana at Lafayette) but it's only roughly two semesters worth and then nothing further. There's plenty of oppertunity for the working filmmaker here in Louisiana but there's nothing as far as education in film, which is sort of ironic, but I guess it wouldn't be the cajun way if it actually made sense... ;)

I've been researching film schools like crazy (Full-Sail, New York Film Academy, USC, etc...) and have come to really admire the program at FSU. As I said, my passion for film is undeniable but my credentials are somewhat lacking, there in lies my problem.

My grades right now are average at best...my GPA coming out of high school wasn't all that great, my ACT score is a 21 my college GPA is a 2.5 as of this past semester and I haven't even taken the SAT.One upside is that I do have a long list of extracurricular activities (mostly church and teaching related) and am director at the top rated TV/News station here in Lafayette.

I guess my question to you all is how well do you think my chances of being accepted are and what can I do to increase my chances? As I said, this is my passion, it's something I know I want to devote my life to and I want to get the best education possible and try to be the best filmmaker I can be.

Thank you all in advance for any help recieved!

God Bless!
-John

I am not an expert on film school admissions by any means BUT...
from everything I have heard, the FSU film school is extremely competitive. They only take a very small number of students and you basically have to have top grades, test scores and extensive film credentials to get in. Full-Sail, on the other hand, is a lot more expensive but they don't require any credentials beyond a GED to get in.

I would try and get an appointment with the admissions folks at the film school.

You have nothing to lose and may find a path to work in your passion as a result.

First off, Thank you so much for the quick reply! Glad to see people actually still care out there!

Cybermom - I know Full-Sail doesn't require a whole lot of credintials but I haven't heard/read a lot of favorable reviews of it online and I'm very wary of all of those "degree in a year" type of programs. I don't want to be part of a cookie-cutter process I guess...I'm going to comtinue here at ULL and try to bring my gpa put some more so hopefully that will help when I try to apply in Fall of 08

Parent - I was kinda hoping to hear from you haha...I've seen you speak on a lot of these posts and you seem not only knowledgable but you seem to actually genuinely care about the well being of a lot of these posters, so as I said, I was kinda hoping this would catch your eye. So is there a way to just sit down with someone at FSU and just talk with them so that maybe I can better explain my situation? I wish I wouls have realized this desire a lot sooner but my ambitions in high school weren't exactly all that high and I've been trying to make up for it ever since. Maybe if I could talk to someone my chances would be a bit better...

At any rate...thank you both again for your responces and it you think of anything else it would be greatly appreciated!

-John

At FSU you can sit down with an admissions officer and explain your credentials. I can't speak to the Film School process (it is extremely competitive) but they do respect passion and talent. How does Harvard select students - they select those who demonstrate passion.

You may be told "no", but in the process you may gain a route you can take.

Persistence pays.
