I am accepted to FSU and am waiting to hear from the film school. I live overseas and have more experience in drama but have 2 years of video comm in HS. i have won many awards for drama dn a big writing award. I have a lot of extra curriculars and have lived overseas all my life and am very cross cultural. What do you think my chances are. I was also accepted to Ithaca College school of communication--does anyone know how the two compare? I dont know much about FSU's program. Can anyone enlighten me. Is it a really good program. I thoght I had a good cahnce of getting called for an interview but living overseas has limited my intern ship opportunites. i am hoping they will consider my travela nd cross cultural and drama awards. any insight into this? oh my GPA is 3.8 and 1330 on SAT old score system.

Wow, interesting how we are in the exact same position. I also live overseas, and am waiting to hear from the film school, waiting for that decision desperately so that I can decide what to do. I can enlighten you about FSU's program: it is one of the best, ranked alongside NYU and USC. It is difficult to get into, but I don't know how difficult and what exactly matters. I guess they give a lot of importance to the Statement of Purpose and Recommendations, but I am not really sure. Where are you from? How they will handle the interview, for us internationals, I don't know. Since I am very serious about attending, I will be more than happy to get a plane ticket and go....I just wish they could tell me more than 10 days in advance though....plane tickets are expensive when you buy them that close to the date. Anyway I wrote the Film School last week and they said they would not make interview invitations for "several weeks". I don't know what "several weeks" means to them. We'll just have to wait and see. Good luck. I hope it is soon.

nachotandi,'i am living in Japan, where are you. I wrote them a while ago and asked if I could do a phone interview,if chosen, and they said yes, but it is better to go in person--I think they will expect us to go and interview. I emailed them 2 days ago and asked if they wanted a mid year report on semester grades, and they said no and that tye were going over applicatins now and interviews would be mid to late april, which is really late because most school want a May 1st decsion from applicants. Where else did youapply. are you an international student or an American living overseas. I am an American living overseas. well thanks for responding and good luck and let me know what you hear.

mid to late april is not good, that is going to be awkward, as you say, since we need to notify the actuall university May 1st.....that will be dangerous, maybe it's on purpose.......I applied to Chapman and Drexel also, and the two best film schools in my home country, Mexico, which are also very hard to get into, but I believe I have a nice shot at both of them. I also tried the longshot USC but am not expecting any good news from there, mainly because I was already rejected from NYU and it is a remarkably similar school.....since I am preoccupied mainly with screenwriting before an actual film degree, I applied for screenwriting, not filmmaking programs at all schools except FSU and one of the Mexican schools. I did however, read amazing things about FSU's program in a book called "Film School Confidential" and decided to apply there for a film degree. Right now, I am seriously considering FSU.....I am hoping I get an interview invitation. It is the only school I would change my future plans for (because I wanted a screenwriting degree before a production degree). If I get the interview, and it goes well, I will probably drop my Mexican applications and stop considering all other Universities I have applied to, because I believe it is an extremley good opportunity. I am an international student, not a US citizen. I think I will go if invited because I would like to see the actual University and Film School before making a definite decision....but I guess I'll have to wait. But, as I said, right now FSU is my first choice. Mid to late April; that makes me anxious. It looks like my future will not be certain for a while. I'll let you know if I hear anything....

here is the actual reply i got:
Applicants who are selected to interview will be telephoned. Those applicants not selected to interview will be notified by mail. The interviews will be held in mid to late April.
Do they have your phone in Mexico? they said they would phone me in japan if i were selected. it is very lat to be going to school fro an itnerview. I also appleid to Ithaca which has a good communic. program. we will ljust wait and see.
Do you go to an INTL shcool. you ay have a great chance at FSU becasue you are an intl. studetn. well lets keep in touch and good luck. at first i thought it would be really easy to get into the film school, becasue they dont ask for high gpa or scores but when i read about it on this site i see that it is very competitve. i just have film experince in HS classes. i have much more drama esperience--what kind of stats do youhve and do you have lots of intern experice in making films--like i said i just have two years of HS film making claasses no outside work or jobs or internships, but i have won some major writing scholarhspip progrm and many awrds for acting in far east shcool comptetitions--i hope that counts for something with them.

Although I am a Mexican citizen, I study at an American High School down in Mexico.......so I've been speaking english pretty much since kindergarten. I'll get a US high school diploma, so, I am not the usual International Applicant. Anyway, I am pretty sure they have my phone number....it makes me nervous because I am pretty much never home....and if they call at a time where my mother isn't home either...which is also pretty much most of the time, they will get my housekeeper who does not speak english and I may not know about it....but I guess they'll find a way to contact me if that is the case. My extra curriculars include a lot of Drama as well, I have had the privilege of holding several lead roles, my theatre teacher wrote one of my recs....we are currently competing in the only theater competition around...my theater group won the first prize last year, so we have a pretty good chance. I also have some film experience, I attended a New York Film Academy Workshop when I was 15 and have shot several short films at home, no classes though, they don't exist in Queretaro, Mexico where I live. I have also written two screenplays, and am currently writing a third. That amounts to all of my film things but I have other extracurriculars. Well, let's hope for the best. I'm glad I talked to you because now I know the interviews are more than a month away, and can sort of relax......sort of.

Has anyone received a message from the FSU film school regarding an interview as of yet?

FSU Film has been calling to set up interviews since last Monday. The interviews are scheduled for between April 1 and April 9.

thanks fro the info. It sounds as if you got the phone call. congrats. I am curious as to what they looked for. I went into the appliction blind, thoght i would get the call casue my academics were way above what they wanted. I have tons of drama exp. and 2 years of video production classes in HS,but i did not stress that that much maybe i should have. just wondering what they were really looking for -- i still may attend FSU an dchange my major to communications/video production-do you know much about the school/ the school of communic. i visited the school last summer but is was so rainy i could not even take the tour--i live in japan so cant go back now to visit, but would love to hear your take on it. thanks.

Why don't you call them at the Film School. It may be hard to reach you with the time difference etc. And yes, I have an interview on April 1st. I was also accepted at USC Film School. I have good academics and ECs, but mainly, I think, my passion for filmmaking helped me.

Congrats on your acceptance at USC, Florida2010! If you are accepted at FSU, which do you think you'll choose and why?

I don't know yet. I visited USC at the end of February to interview for a scholarship. I haven't visited the FSU film school yet. But I had a great time at USC. Money will be a factor and I haven't heard if I am getting the USC scholarship. I am in-state for FSU.

wow, great choices, what were your stats--to have all of these choices? good luck. hope you get the school you want.

Just withdrew my application to FSU Film School. Decided not to interview. Good Luck to all who are.

Was the resume for the film school app supposed to be your activities/extracurriculars/awards resume, or a creative list resume? I sent the former type, but should I have also attached a creative works resume? Because then the only way to judge an applicant would be from the 1000 word essay...

anyone know?

This is an old thread...might want to post out in the general area.

I was wondering how I could boost my chances of being accepted because after close looking, FSU is my second choice after Tisch

My stats are like 1300/ 1910 SAT after no prep ( I will no how much improved on the june sat in 4 days knock on wood) Ill have taken at least 7 ap's and am in thje top 5% with 4.9 weighted gpa and 4.0 uw.
i want to know how to improve my chances though of getting in because im worried. i have made films but i dont know if id be able to send anything so I am considering to just write a draft of a short screenplay. i just did my grad project on a documentary on graffiti but i dont think film schools would like that. i am in film school and an officer of it. but i am just all too worried that i dont have a chance of getting into FSU or NYU.

WHAT DO I DO?

Your grades are great and your test scores are probably fine, but it won't hurt if your SAT comes up a bit more.

First of all, look at what you'll need to send in to apply to FSU's film school:
http://film.fsu.edu/film_school/programs/admissions/bfa_in_production

You cannot send screenplays, films, or any other work you have done. You can only send a resume listing the work. I would look for contests or festivals in which you could enter films you have made or screenplays you have written. Then if you win awards, you can list those on your resume.

Also, think about who can give you letters of recommendation that would highlight your creativity and potential as a filmmaker.

Do a great job on your essay.

If you are selected for an interview, think about how you will express your passion for filmmaking.

FSU's film school is ultra-competitive as is NYU. I would recommend coming up with some safety schools where you can still study film is you aren't accepted at either of these schools. Here is a link where you can find info on lots of film schools:
