Film schools. List some.

Now I would like your opinions on this. What are some of the best film schools in the country? I mainly look at the notable alumni in a school, and see how successful they are. I've made up a list of which schools are the best and which schools are the worst. Maybe I've missed some, please give me your opinion.

Nyu…

In no particular order - UCLA, USC, NYU, Chapman, Northwestern, Columbia College (Chicago) Florida State, Syracuse, UNC… Also, the entertainment industry is very Ivy League-heavy… lots of Harvard and Yale types.

I’ve heard from some that University of Wisconsin- Mikwaukee was a good film school, but from others that’ve said it’s not. Does anyone know truly how good that school is or isn’t?

True enough in the case of Harvard and Yale, but not because they went to film school. A lot of Harvard alum got their start writing for the Lampoon and most Yale alum have the Drama School on their resume, not film studies.

Offhand I’d say USC, NYU, Wesleyan, and Emerson are a few choices. But you should be able to do research yourself online and with some college guide books and come up with a lot more schools.

Probably USC, they are very big on film. Its also an incredible school.

This would be better if they had put the size of the school in the denominator, but interesting nonetheless:

One on the list that hasn’t been mentioned is U of Michigan.

^^Agree with the comment that said, including actors probably skews the results. Actors are by their nature highly intelligent and it would stand to reason that there would be some correlation with the top private and state flagship public’s. But, that doesn’t translate as having a great film school.

^^^^ “Actors are by their nature highly intelligent”

Lol…

No disrespect to any aspiring actors on this thread but I thought about all the actors in Hollywood and just couldn’t suppress a laugh.

^^Hey, anybody who rates an IMDB biography - AND a photograph - has my respect.

By UNC listed above I’m guessing that they meant the North Carolina School of the Arts, which is part of the UNC System. Florida State is probably the second best film school in the East after NYU. Also look at Ithaca College; Middlebury; some of the City University of New York schools; Temple; UNC-Wilmington. Almost any large state university will have a film program of some type if not the breadth or depth of say USC. Take a look at what we here at UW-Madison have to offer in the Radio, Television, and Film concentration in the Communication Arts Department as an example: A Generous Gift from Communication Arts Alumni – Department of Communication Arts – UW–Madison. You will note that it is critical studies heavy as opposed to production.

You can search the colleges’ websites for additional information. Remember you will be required to do your own research in college so now is a good time to star.

USC
UCLA
NYU

Those are the big three… then there’s LMU, Chapman, UT Austin, Emerson… BU has a good program. But remember, “making it” somehow is about connections, which you can make at schools other than USC… My safeties are CSUN and CSULA due to their location and the mere fact that they HAVE programs.
