Film Studies at Northwestern?

Is anyone familiar with this program at NU? I know it's not comparable to the likes of USC or NYU, but is it at least decent?

Which one do you mean, specifically? They don’t have a “Film Studies” major, but they have Radio/TV/Film and Communications Studies majors, a well as a Film & Media Studies minor. There is also a Screen Cultures grad program.

The RTVF program is pretty nice, it’s not USC or NYU caliber but it seems to rank pretty well in people’s top ten and top twenty lists. I personally chose to apply to NU ED and go with their RTVF program over regular decision USC or UCLA because I’m also interested in having a lot of options for studying outside of the major. They have some nice graduates to boast and a lot of connections, so the networking opportunities are good and there are apparently plenty of opportunities to get involved with actual film making both in and out of class, and they cover a lot of culture and theory in-class.

If you mean some of the other programs, I know a lot less, but I’m sure someone around here can fill you in. =)

All I can tell you is that my daughter has been an actor for many NYU and NU student films over the years and overall she finds the NU students more creative, inventive, organized and professional, so I’m not sure your assessment of NU not being comparable to NYU is all that accurate.

As far as name recognition, the program at NYU is just going to be higher up on people’s lists. People know about it, respect it, etc. Then again, a lot of people come from NYU for film, whereas fewer will come out of NU, which might give you an edge simply for standing out. As NU kids become more recognized, it will indeed climb the ranks. And the cool thing about NU is that it is interested in turning people into filmmakers/industry professionals, not just fine-tuning filmmakers into something more. You can start from scratch at NU, and still come out adept at what you want to do.

But most of the “not NYU caliber” sense comes from the fact that the program is definitely smaller, and doesn’t benefit (money or talent-wise) from being a big, recognized program like USC or NYU. However, as a program is it solid and well-done, and apparently turns out good professionals, so it definitely ranks at “decent”, if not much higher.

thank you, perididdle  and yes, I meant RTVF.

amtc, I agree with perididdle that film at NYU is more-well known, so even though the RTVF program at NU is great, it doesn’t carry the same ‘prestige,’ as NYU. what I was concerned about was that the number of opportunies available to students at NYU will probably be greater than the oppotunities given to NU students simply because the program at NYU is more well known.

thanks for both of your inputs!

^^ mediapollito, there are many NU alums who work in Hollywood. Attending NU is not a detriment to one’s career. In fact, there’s a reason why they are called the “Northwestern Mafia” in Hollywood.
