Film Studies or Film

I know that with my strong interest in film that I will probably end up majoring (or double-majoring) with film. But I noticed a lot of schools don't offer both. What is the difference between the two majors and how will it affect a potential career in filmmaking

Thanks

Film studies looks at other peoples' films, since the medium began, and analyzes how the various aspects (screenplay, acting, cinematography, special effects, etc.) interact to make a message and tell a visual story.

Film production teaches one how to be the maker of new films: to write, cast, direct and edit your own film.

By analogy, the Film Studies major is like the English Literature major studying the great novels and writing critical reports that analyze why they work, when they were made, how they were received at the time, and what are the messages conveyed through the written language.

By analogy, the Film production major is more like someone majoring in Creative Writing, producing their own short stories, novellas or poetry.

A good film production major should also know about Film Studies or at least the history of film; and I'm guessing teh reverse holds true, too; that to be able to critique a film well it would be helpful to have some personal experiencing making one's own short film, if only a few times, to gain insight into all the choices a director must make.

That was my best shot. Hope it helps you!
