Fin Aid for kid in college?

I applied for financial aid for D who is now a freshman. Only got work study and 2 loans totalling $5500 -- one subsidized, one unsubsidized. Part of the reason is that while 2009's income would have qualified me for aid, 2010 was better. And yes I'm self-employed (which accounts for the swings in income but also I have read on this forum that self-employed parents get worse treatment for financial aid).

2011 definitely looks like it will be as low as 2009 or lower, which makes me think I might get aid for D's upcoming sophomore year. Do I do the same process as before -- fill out CSS profile and FAFSA again with estimated 2011 numbers, send tax returns when available? Or should I just call the school and ask their procedure?

Check the FA pages of the school’s website. You will still want to file FAFSA and Profile by their priority FA deadline, which is usually Feb/March. Whether you’ll need to file with estimates or not depends on how quickly your taxes are done. Often, returning students are packaged much later than freshmen so be prepared for a longer turnaround time.
