Fin. Aid for Summer school (CC)

I wasn't going to apply, for fin. aid for summer school, because it was only going to cost a couple hundred.

But my cousin advised me to apply, therefore I am.

It says that I must fill out a fafsa, but if I already filled one out for UC Irvine, do I have to make a new one, or how do I indicate that I will be attending Fullerton Jr College for the summer?

Make a Corrections Fafsa?

Is the FAFSA you filled out for next year or were you in school already and did one for last year? Some (most I think) schools consider the summer part of the previous year for financial aid which would mean it is based on the 2008-2009 FAFSA. . Others consider it part of the subsequent year which means it would be based on the 2009-2010 FAFSA. You need to find out which system the school uses and if you have not completed the appropriate FAFSA you will need to do so. If you have already completed it you will need to add the CC to the schools on the FAFSA.

But some things to be aware of - if the summer is considered part of the next year it may reduce the amount of aid you will get during the 2009-2010 school year. For instance if you were awarded the maximum Stafford for 2009-2010 but take some during the summer, it will reduce the amount you will get during the school year. Same for the Pell grant (though the Pell rules are changing to allow additional summer Pell, not sure if that starts this summer - at my daughters school they are not awarding additional summer Pell this year but they include summer as part of the previous year). You are supposed to be a degree seeking student at the school you are requesting aid from. This may preclude you from getting summer aid through them. You would need to ask. Also for federal loans you must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours in the summer to be given a federal loan.

the Fafsa I filled out is for 09-10. So I would just add the CC to the list of schools applied to, but where is it that I may distinguish that it is for the summer?

I am enrolled for 6 units in the summer.

You cannot distinguish that it is for the summer. If the school you are going to in the summer counts summer as part of the **previous **year then you will have to file a 2008-2009 FAFSA using 2007 tax info and list the school. If they count it as part of next year then you would just have to add them to the 2009-2010 FAFSA you have already completed. You need to ask them which FAFSA they require. If it is the 2008-2009 one then adding them to the 2009-2010 FAFSA will do absolutely nothing for you.

Financial aid is based on the school year not a calender year. As I explained in my first post, apparently not very well, for many schools the summer is considered part of the previous year (this is the case at both my kids schools but is not universal). For these schools the 2009-2010 school year starts in the fall so the 2009-2010 FAFSA works for aid fall 2009 through summer 2010. So for these schools *this *summer is part of the 2008-2009 school year so requires a 2008-2009 FAFSA. The decision whether to call this summer part of 2008-2009 or part of 2009-2010 lies with each school so you have to know which they require. Ask them.

I am not sure you are eligible for aid through them as you are not a degree seeking student at that institution. You also need to ask them that question.
