Anyone know more about fin aid for internationals? How competitive is it?.. What do i need to get in on aid?

jhl,

This information comes directly from the Lafayette Financial Aid Webpage:

<<< International students living outside the United States and seeking financial aid must complete the International Student Financial Aid Application (available from Lafayette). Funding is limited and may affect the admission decision. >>>

Also be aware that, due to limited funding, admission is NOT need-blind for international students. However, if accepted, the College will meet your demonstrated need, up to and including, full tuition, room and board, books, and supplies.

From what I have observed, it seems that the admissions process for international students is EXTREMELY competitive. With that said, if you are offered admission, you'll most likely receive a generous financial aid package, assuming your family demonstrates sufficient need.

The bottom line is, if you're accepted, Lafayette will work with you to make sure you can afford to attend the College for four years.

Yeah...if u can get in...(from my experience at least)...it seems Lafayette indeed makes every effot to "take you in"...at least on financial terms...

shail619,

Yes, Lafayette does make every effort to meet the financial needs of all accepted international students.

The trick, as you so astutely intimate, is to gain acceptance first!

My SAT now is just 610CR, 780M, 680W- 2070.. Is my CR too low for an international needing aid?
Anyone know the admission rate for internationals needing aid?.. Thanks..

I think for the class of 2011..you had to get into the top 10% of the international pool to get in...

@Jhl....I myself had 2030 only and yet I ended up with almost full ride aid...so 2070 isn't that bad after all you see :)

jhl,

Yes, a little less than 10% of international applicants were accepted into the Class of 2011. I believe an admissions officer once told me that they received about 1,100 applications, and could only provide funding (and therefore admit) about 100 students. Compare that acceptance rate with the normal rate for domestic applicants of about 35%!

Keep in mind that SAT scores are definitely not the most important factor in college admissions. Also be aware that your scores will be in direct competition with those of other international students with similar CR scores.

As evidenced by shail619's case, your SAT scores place you square in the running for a space in the Class of 2012.

Go for it!

I second what Justin and shail619 said. I mean they also looked at all the other components of the your application as well. And if you have a chacen to schedule an interview with an admission staff, try to do that as well. I did that last year and it was quite fun:)

I wonder how my chances would go up if i were to apply ed?..

You really should look at your other records (sports, music, speaking etc.) Also remember that the aid is need-based, not merit-based, so don't let a slightly bad score or record phase you. (Conversely don't expect full aid just because you have a great score)
I had 2270 in SAT 1 and my tuition is entirely waived and I get a loan to pay for about half the rest.

I believe it could improve your chance but do consider carefully whether Lafayette is the place you wanna be in for the next four years if you plan to apply ED..I have friends who have gotten into other colleges through ED and regretted it afterwards as they could have gone to other places..On the other hand, if lafayette is the place for you, go ahead and give it a try

Shail619- how much was your CR?
Basu- where are you from?
I read about converting the regular application to early decision before a certain date.. Could i do that after being rejected by another college ED? Ie lafayette being my 2nd choice?..

my CR was 610..believe it or not I took the SAT thrice..got 570 in the first one...600 in the second and 610 at last... Now this is what we call "frustratingly funny" :D

PS: All's well that ends well...so so true :D

jhl,

You are receiving some wonderful insights from Basu, tbhnams, and shail619. Be sure to read through their comments carefully.

Applying ED will definitely place you in the top of the international applicant pool, as it demonstrates your enthusiasm for the College. However, as noted by tbhnams, only apply ED if Lafayette is truly your top choice.

FYI, I believe Basu is from India. Since he has yet to get back to you, I thought I'd just respond to that question.

Only domestic applicants can convert their RD applications to ED status by February 15th. For some reason, international students are not given that option to convert to ED. For proof, refer to this portion of the Admissions Website and read the bolded text: http://www.lafayette.edu/admissions/international/admissions.html#early.

All the best,

Candyman- so i can convert to ed until january first?
Shail619- did you apply ed?
Thanks everybody!

jhl,

I see no information that says international students are given the option of converting their submitted RD applications to ED status. You can wait to apply, however, until January 1st as you decide between RD and ED, which would serve the same purpose.

Keep in mind that ED applications are accepted from November 1st to January 1st.

I did RD... but now only I have realized that I couldn't have landed myself in a better place... LAFAYETTE ROCKS :)

Justin...one question...does Lafayette send the roomate selection information by regular mail or by express mail?...I just can't wait to know more about my roomate....

@jhl -- Yes I am from India. It seems that I'm the only Indian this year, but cant be quite sure yet.
@shail619 -- The only things I got by express mail was my offer letter and I20. I think it'll be normal mail. It takes about 5-7 days for normal mail to reach me here in India, so I guess it'll be similar for you.

Basu-what are your stats and ecs?..
Thanks everybody..
