so i got mines yesterday. it was pretty okay. but i was expecting a bit more. they gave me 44k/52k. w/ 5k in loans. efc 0. only met like 85% of my need. i thought they were supposed to meet 94% of my need. or does that percentage decrease as the years go by? can i appeal for more grants?
i think gwu is a bit more affordable now, but still not sure if i'm attending or can actually pay the extra 8k. what about you guys?

I have not received my financial aid package including need, but I would assume that I won't get any more than I got in scholarship. All of my EFC calculated "need" was eradicated by the scholarship, but I still can't quite afford $33k /yr. I don't know what I'll do, but it's looking like GWU is my best bet even if I can't afford it upfront. I can count on enough for the first two years. What are they going to do after that, kick me out (assuming I keep my GPA up, of course)?

My efc is $42k/yr but my parents can't afford that. I got half tuition, so I have to pay the rest because I don't think I'll get financial aid (I haven't received the packet yet). I heard that if you keep your grades up, you can get more scholarship for the next year. Also, GW provides employment opportunities...

20k grant
10k uni and alum award
7k is loans/work study

37/52?

was planning on going to brandeis...but 15k a year is damn good.

6k a year..woo sarcasm

Hey student1988, there is an academic scholarship available to current students. If you maintain a certain gpa (3.7-3.8 not exactly sure) for two consecutive (after 30 credits), you'll receive a scholarship. It looks like you got an academic scholarship, so the rules might alter.

Details can be found at http://gwired.gwu.edu/adm/financial/scholarships.html listed under "Presidential Awards for Continuing Students."

yep, I got a merit scholarship (half tuition presidential scholarship). According to the web site you provided, the scholarship can be increased if I can maintain a 3.8 for 60 hours at GW. I have a 3.91 in high school right now, so hopefully I'll be able to keep my GPA high :).

Do you receive the financial aid package separately from your acceptance letter?

yes, but I haven't gotten the package yet. (scholarship came with acceptance letter)

anyone from the midwest get their aid packets yet? Financial aid office at GW told me they went out priority mail on monday

i got 44K. hmmm...im gonna go convince my parents to let me go...sucks that GWU is so expensive

how common are these half-tuition presidential scholarships? it seems like quite a few people on here got them (i did too) but then again, that could be skewed considering the type of students CC attracts.

I'm on the west coast and still haven't gotten the packet yet... what should I do? I called last week and they said that it would be sent out by Thursday of last week... I really need to know soon because I have to decide and money is a major issue. Has anyone else on the west coast received a packet yet?

ironjawedangel-Call them again! Demand an answer.

didn't qualify for S H I T --- 53,000 for me ---that 's fair since my parents started saving for my college when my dad got his first job---that's the way to encourage people to save in the US

Half-tuition eradicated all of my need, so I didn't get anything but the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan I got everywhere else. Oh well, I might get a break when my sister goes to college next year.

I just got my f. aid packet. Turns out, that according to GW, I don't even qualify for need based aid. But there is no way my parents can pay 50,000 a year. GW is my dream school, I can't image going anyway else. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? I dont' understand how so many apathetic students, merely because of their stats, get half tuition scholarships, (believe me, I talked to a few who didn't even care), and then people like me, middle class, can't afford to go. This entire process is so screwed up. Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions about what to do, I would grealty appreciate it. Thanks!

ironjawedangel -- that's exactly how I felt! I was accepted ED too, so I was even more annoyed that I was stuck going to GW when my family needed significantly more money. My parents seriously considered breaking the contract, as they only gave us $4,000, a totally insignificant amount.

However, my parents sent in an appeal to the financial aid office, essentially listing why they needed more money (close to retirement, healthcare costs, etc.), as well as scheduling a meeting down in DC with someone from the financial aid office. I received a new aid package several weeks ago that awarded us about $12,000 in grants/work-study.

So, my advice is to have your parents either schedule a meeting at GW or at least contact somebody from the office. They were very helpful.

lo where are yiu from. Im in florida and I'm still waiting for mine.

If you don't mind me asking, what were your SAT scores? My daughter did not receive any merit scholarship eventhough she has a 5.8/6.0 weighted (all AP/Honors). Thanks
