how do we get the most money? any tips?

i was wondering about that too. do you think they have their estimates etc in the big envelope since we were supposed to have applied for fin aid already?

really?? oh crap...i sent in CSS but not FAFSA yet...

http://admit.stanford.edu/finaid.html
That might help, there's some good info on there.
I also sent in my CSS, but not the FAFSA.
Eh, we probably make too much to get anything, even though we have a 7 person family.

does anyone remember the cost estimate? wasn't it 45 thou with room n board? ouch. but it's so worth it. when's the FAFSA deadline? and when do we find out CSS results? i don't even know what it's for.
I keep hearing these crazy stories - or maybe not so crazy, i don't know - about how if we emancipate ourselves we could get double the aid b/c we'll be independents and jobless.i wonder...
just wondering if everyone posting is from the outrageously-rich/rich/middle/poor/starving-poor bracket. i'm from a single parent family but i have a have girthy college fund tucked away.

The estimate they gave my family was the ****. Somehow we're supposed to be able to spend 25% of our gross income on my tuition, when they're about to send another kid to private high school next year (my sis'll be a freshman, my brother's tuition costs $10K already). Their estimate is triple what we're paying for my tuition (and we're already on aid at my school).

Plus, my mom's pay is gonna decrease because she's leaving the ER night shift (she's pushing 50 and can't it anymore.)

CSS results come in with mailed admission decision.

****.

Try 30% of our gross income. Berkeley anybody?

so you guys all got the mailed envelope already? aww, I want mine.
and don't be so discouraged. practically everyone going to college is gonna owe mucho loans until they're 30, so it's pretty much the norm. adn think of how much you'll be making after you get out. I don't care how much $$ they want - I'm just happy to go, period.

Is there really such a difference in salary between a Berkeley grad and a Stanford grad? Also, most of the people who get into Stanford could probably get a close to full ride at a less-prestigious school, so there's that to think about too.

omg...my mom told me about this girl that went to a really prestigious school (i don't remember which) and then med school. well..after she got out of med school, she had to pay 6000 every MONTH to pay off her loan.

...crazy.

I thought the FAFSA became available January 1st? I'm not sure. It'd be nice to get some money!

My mom knows doctors who make $200K/year but can't buy a nice place because they have so much debt.

gave us virtually 0 fin aid :/, 35%+ of parents gross income

man, this makes me even a little bit anxious about getting that envelope, even though it should be total joy :/

yea, when i opened the package, i was like "cool, the real letter", then i lookd behind it at the FA estimates, "not cool."

ROTC anyone? Maybe I should see if I could get a scholarship that way.

we'll maybe that's becasue you're all rich! I'm expecting A LOT of aid. unless they want me to strip, which is okay too. seriously, are you people rich?

the ROTC idea is not funny! you're in stanford@!!! why the hell would you risk death for militarism. and besides, only 30% of people they promise money to actually get it - and they make your pay a 2000 nonrefundable recruitment bond thing. the army sucks.

i wish 45k a year was 25% of my family's income....

The ROTC idea was not a joke.

ROTC is a scholarship/training program - the government covers your tuition and pays you a monthly stipend. You do training once a week (for AF it's at San Jose, for Navy it's at Berkeley), and afterwards you're commissioned for four years. I'd never do Army ROTC anyways - my dad would never let me live it down (21 year Navy guy).

It's not "risking death for militarism." The Navy is the reason I'm an American instead of a farm boy in the Philippines. They've done well by my family. Don't knock it.

I've been considering it for a while now.
