My daughter will be attending MSU in the fall and will be starting an internship away from home after graduation this spring. My question come in as to how she will fill out her FASFA next year as to will she be on her own and will not have to use our income and assets or will she have to use ours? She will be on campus and she will be living in the Detroit area to do her internship, we will not be paying for her college after the first year. We do not plan on using her as a dependent after this year.

I am assuming your daughter is a senior in high school. If that is the case, she will be considered dependent for financial aid purposes whether or not you pay for her and whether or not you claim her on your taxes. Your income and asset information is required in order for her to apply for financial aid.

I understand that and we used all the informatin for the fasfa this year but since she will be on her own after next year she will not be living here so will she have to claim our income or just hers from her internship?

It doesn’t matter whether you will be supporting her or not…nor does it matter that she won’t be living at home.

She’s under age 24 and she’s not married, a vet, or has a dependent child that she supports.

She will be a dependent on FAFSA the whole undergrad time (unless she gets married or has a child she supports.)

When your daughter completes the FAFSA, there will be two sections that she will be REQUIRED to complete. One section will list YOUR (the parents) income and asset information. The other will list HER (the student’s) income and asset information. Your daughter is REQUIRED to include both on her FAFSA form.

It doesn’t matter if she is self supporting, and lives on her own for FAFSA purposes. Your tax filing status has nothing to do with the completion of the FAFSA. Your daughter will be considered a dependent of yours UNLESS she becomes an orphan, ward of the state (before 18), a veteran, marries, has a dependent child she supports, gets her bachelors degree, is age 24 or over, or is in guardianship of someone other than her parents (again, I believe this has to have happened before age 18).

So…short answer…your daughter will include HER income and assets AND your income and assets.

There are a series of questions on FAFSA that determine whether a student is dependent or independent for FAFSA. None of the questions relate to being financially self supporting or taxes. Until your daughter can answer yes to one of the questions, she is a dependent for FAFSA and must report both parent and her own financial information.

My son dropped out of school for several years and was completely independent and self supporting. When he returned to school at 22 he was still our dependent for FAFSA.

I just graduated high school in 2011 and am looking to start school in january in florida. I currently live with my two brothers, one sister, and mom. My mom is a nurse but doesnt handle money well at all so we live paycheck to paycheck. We recently abandoned our house for the government to take and moved to a house we could rent because we could no longer afford our mortgage. My mom is depressed and suicidal. Also, my mom refuses to help pay for my schooling because she does not want me to move away. My dad died in november of 2010 so it has been just about a year now. Am i likely eligible for financial aid?

kcollings you probably would get more relevant advice if you started a new thread.
Everyone is eligible for Stafford loans ( as long as their school participates).
However you will need your mothers financial info to fill out the FAFSA.
( applying mid year, you will likely find less aid than if you wait till fall)
