Finacial aid

My girlfrriend lives in a home with a single
Mother and 2 kids including herself, do you
Think she will recieve a lot of finacial aid from out of state schools

Few public (state) Us give out much aid. UMich, UVA and UNC do. Some states have funding for people attending in-state schools - Bright Futures in FL, TAP in NY… What state?

Maryland, what about from the government?

It won’t matter that she has a single mother or 2 siblings. It will matter how much money that single mother makes (some make little, some make lots). If the mother makes little, it is possible she’ll qualify for a Pell grant from the feds, maybe SEOG which is a fed grant but awarded by the school, some work study. If she goes OOS to a public school, it is unlikely she’ll get much in need based aid from another state, but may get some merit awards. From a private in another state, it’s likely she’ll get need based aid from the school in the same amount she’d get if she lived 10 miles or 1000 miles away; need based.

Federal aid mainly consists of a Pell Grant if you are low income, up to 5,770 per year, and a student loan of 5,500.

If you need more, you have to either apply to schools that give good need based aid or apply to schools where you have high gpa and test scores for that school to get merit aid. Often out of state public schools will not give need aid. However privates schools do.

No one can tell you what she can get based on lack of information in your post.

Which schools?

If she is very low income, then she’d get a Pell Grant for about $5700 and a student loan for $5500. That’s about $11,000. That will not likely pay for an OOS school.

Are you wondering if UMaryland will give your GF a lot of aid as an OOS student?

For OOS schools, she should be targeting PRIVATE schools, not public ones. Private schools award FA independent of state of residency.

Are you asking whether the state of Maryland government will give her sufficient aid to attend UMDCP? If so…the answer is likely no.

Need based aid will be based on her family income…but really OOS public universities have their first obligation to provide aid to the tax paying residents of their state…not out of state students.

On another thread, you say you want to transfer OUT of Maryland to one of the SUNY campuses.

Does your GF want to attend UMD?
