Does anyone have any experience with financial aid at Georgetown, people tell me that since the school is broke that they wont give up much money, but it's purely speculation on their part. I come from a family of six and while my EFC was kinda high around 25 grand, my father no longer makes that much and hasn't for almost a year, will that factor into the decision because they ask for the previous years tax forms which wont reflect the change? BU gave me no FinAid saying that I was not financially qualified, should I expect Georgetown to respond in the same manner? But BU gives merit based scholarships, is it possible that my financial need was less than the scholarship so they just gave me that instead (or it was the same)? I really don't want to goto BU at all...but I don't want to put a huge burden on my parents by going to Georgetown (although I'm still unsure of how much I'll receive). I called Georgetown but left a messege and got impatient so I figured I'd ask here.

We were nervous about how G'town would respond to our financial aid needs due to their comparatively meager endowment...but surprisingly, they have offered my son a very nice finaid package - and we are pleased! Best of luck to you!

Would you mind giving some particulars?? Your rough income and what they determined your efc to be... if my D could make it in, I would hate to have to decline the admit d/t $$$$$ reasons. Thanks. If uncomfortable, I certainly understand.

BTW-welcome shiraz!

thanks momnipotent (gotta love that name!)... annual income is <45k, our efc, according to g'town is ~13k (due to the fact that son has a college fund set up at birth by grandparents), they've offered scholarship of ~23k, work study, stafford and perkins loans make up the difference. seems like a decent offer to us...

thanks for the heads up...how long did it take for them to make a financial aid decision?

masta, it took around two weeks for the finaid package to arrive after receiving the acceptance letter. i think you (your parents, actually) should speak to the finaid people regarding the change in the family's financial situation...again...good luck!

Mine was comparable to the other schools that I got into. I noticed that Georgetown gives a lot less loans though.

G'town was one of four schools I got into, and one of three that gave me actual fin aid packages (long story about local big state uni bureaucracy). I'm low low income, so I was banking on some niiiiice packages.

G'Town met the large majority of my need. Reasonable loans, fair amount of work study, and an ok EFC that could have been pinched and scraped to meet.

Compared to another need-blind, will meet 100% of your need school, G'town was slightly less generous. G'town EFC was a tad bit higher, enough to be a turn off, but loans were the same... work study higher, but it's G'Town - that's expected with the higher cost of living.

Compared to another need-blind school with a reputation for gapping, not quite first tier school, G'town had less loans. But the other school only required an additional 2 or 3k more for the first year (of course, you become eligible for more loans as you progress, but...) AND the other school offered me a large merit scholarship and NO EFC.

In general, it was about the same across the board, with minor differences grant and loan wise. But I might have a very different financial aid scenario than you...

what exactly is a stafford or perkins loan? I was wondering if there was a grace period upon graduation, and if at any time these loans would be interest free?

If i was given a preliminary amount over the phone...and the actual aid i received was half of what i was told on the phone, is there anything I can do? Could the e-mail be a quote for one semester?
