Finaid: Dependent v Independent student

Quick question: Do Independent students receive more money than dependent students from FAFSA?

My sibling seems to have less money than I do, however, she is a independent student and I am dependent. This is the only difference I see.

Much appreciated. Thank you.

Is that sibling married? I’m reading “Debt-Free U” and I think I read there that independent students get more FAFSA money if they’re married, emancipated, or in foster care…? Not sure, but the book exposes the whole FAFSA formula to be really “not good”, to say the least.

My sibling is not married.

I’m an independent student, and my friend is one as well, but she has 2 kids and is married. She got a whole lot of more money than I did. But I believe the independent student gets more than a dependent student unless your parents are dirt poor. For a semester, out of 13k total calculated cost, I only had to come up with 4k of my own money, if that helps.

Thank you. That helps a lot. :)

Oh, I should mention what your efc will ultimately determine. Mine for this year was like 5800 or something like that. This is under the fact that I also made about $24k taxable income
