I am in a sticky situation here.

I go to a UC, and qualified for abysmal financial aid---22k in parent plus loans and 6000 in unsubsidized stafford loans.

However, I grew up in Canada and hold US-Canadian Dual citizenship. I checked with an immigrantion lawyer, and I will never get into any trouble for being a dual citizen.

Since I went to elementary school in canada, I just found out that I can apply and be eligible for financial aid from the Canadian Government for Canadians studying aboard.

Any Fin Aid that the Canadian government gives me would be interest-free 0 % until I graduate whereas any US Government fin aid I get would be at a 6. 8 % interest rate!!!

Given I am a transfer from community college to a 4 year university with two years left to graduation, I would have to wait until three years to pay the loan off. (includes one year to work)

However, THeoretically, I could also play it such that I get financial aid from BOTH the US and Canadian Governments. THat way, I wouldn't have to get high interest private loans.

Would UC Irvine find out? How would this work?

THe Canadian Gov loans would kick in AFTER the stafford loans come through already. So would my stafford loans be reduced or could I get both loans from canadian gov and US?

Does anybody have any information about these circumstances using dual citizenship to get two types of federal aid? There is nothing in the loans small print that says I can't do this. It probably isn't encouranged, but certainly not illegal. How would I go about doing this?
I simply cannot and do not wish to take out a private loan from sallie mae loan shark. My parents refuse to pay their full 22 k contribution. Please don't give advice about that since there is absolutey nothing I can do on that behalf so i'm looking at getting a canadian federal aid fro students studying abroad (And I qualify b/c there is a clause that says I can study abroad and get fin aid from canada if by studying abroad I can graduate faster..)
