If I win local scholarships, will my aid be reduced by how much I win or just partially reduced?

I felt that my FA was a bit low considering my situation…Should I appeal via phone/mail or visit the Financial Aid Office in person while I go to their accepted student visitation days?

The fine print on the FA letter said that it is calculated for 12 credits/semester. If you need 120 to graduate, am I suppose to pay for the additional 24 credits (12 x 2 x 4 = 96…120-96= 24)?

My FA letter said I would need to take out a 3k loan and 2k work study to pay for school. On the next page, it says my loans are capped at $22,000. What is this all about? Where are they getting this figure?

I would be very appreciative if someone could please help me out with these questions. Thanks so much!

If you did not report your scholarship, or if the scholarship was received after you applied for FA, then yes.

You can always ask, but I don't think they can do much about it unless there was a major mistake.

No.

It means that your loan for 4 years will not exceed 22000, which essentially doesn't mean anything for you. They just made it up after some calculation behind the office.

Thanks for the response, IhateCR, but you didn't seem to read my first question correctly. I am asking whether my FA is reduced by whatever I receive or partially reduced.

It depends on the schools policies. If your full need has been met (COA - EFC) then most schools will reduce your aid by any scholarships. However most will reduce loans first then work study before reducing grants. You would need o ask the school to be sure what their policy is.

1. If I win local scholarships, will my aid be reduced by how much I win or just partially reduced?

This isn't really a school policy issue, it depends on the type of scholarship you won.

Check the fine print of the scholarship. Generally, if it's a "restricted" scholarship, they will send your award directly to the University and it will affect your aid. If the scholarship is "unrestricted", the group will send a check directly to you and you'll decide how to spend it (books, supplies, travel home, etc.). From what I've seen (and I'm not an aid officer, so you must double check this officially), big name scholarships (Target, Coke, Toyota) are restricted while small ones (Lion's Club, Rotary Club) are unrestricted.

Please call Student Financial Services about aid questions. Even my responses to aid questions might be wrong. No one here is a financial aid officer.
