FinAid package -- crossposted to FinAid forum

I was finally able to access my Finaid decision online today for UW Madison and I am shocked. They calculated my need at 12 grand, which is what I was expecting, but they're only offering me 6.5 in aid and it's all LOANS. (fed perkins and subsidized stafford).

Is this normal?? Why wasn't I offered any grants? Could this have something to do with them processing my application at such a late date? (I only just sent in a document they needed about two weeks ago). I talked to a rep over the phone and he assured me there was enough money to go around and not to worry.

We just checked for our dd. She received $10K, all loans. We are not surprised because we are not Wisc residents, altho we get reduced tuition through reciprocity. We were hoping for some merit aid tho'....

As a state school UW does not provide grants to many out of state undergraduate students. Few state schools do. They are very up front in stating this in their informational materials. If there is a local UW lum club they offer some grants to local students in many cities.
