Just created a thread in MT - we will need this thread soon so setting it as a placeholder. Hopefully, a moderator can pin it to the top.

I guess I can go ahead and get this thing going!

Background/Training: Performing Arts High School, improv classes, filmmaking classes, and many regional and school productions.

Summer Programs: California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) for theater and National High School Institute (Cherubs/Northwestern) for Acting on Film.

Final Decision: Chapman ED.

It was a rough week in our house when he didn’t pass the CMU prescreen (after doing an on-campus master class where he got great feedback and was invited to observe the freshmen acting class) and then didn’t pass the DePaul prescreen, but he quickly regrouped and focused his attention back on Screen Acting at Chapman. In May 2017, we toured Chapman, and it was the very first school (and we had toured a lot!) where he turned to me mid-way and said “I really like it here.” He even wanted to buy a hat at the end of it! It’s really the only program in the country that mirrored his experience at Cherubs where you get acting AND production classes. He loves acting on film, but is also interested in writing and television so he’s just thrilled beyond belief that he’s going to Chapman for Screen Acting.

Congratulations! How wonderful that he was accepted to the school that he fell in love with! It sounds perfect for him!

That’s fantastic, best of luck to him at Chapman!

Congratulations @Twoboysandadog !! Great story and wishing your S much success at Chapman!!!

I’m so happy your S found his fit, @Twoboysandadog ! Best wishes to him!

Thanks, everyone! It is a huge relief to know he’s going to a program he loves.

Bumping this as the season is winding down. Maybe a moderator could pin it to the top?

Thank you @actingdreams – maybe our boys will work together at some point?

Can’t wait to see where everyone ends up!

Bump! We really need a moderator to pin this!

I’m posting to try to bump this up. Can a moderator pin it? My favorite thread -can’t wait to start reading everyone’s stories.

Coach: None

Background/Training: Played percussion and was in band from 5th-10th grade; didn’t start acting until age 14; started high school theatre classes as a junior (stopped band); started vocal lessons at 16; started tap lessons at 17. We live in a small town in SC with limited theatre resources so he took the few acting classes that were available and joined a Teen Troupe at a local theatre that meets weekly during the school year to work on acting, singing, dancing. He was a technical theatre intern during a summer for a local theatre. Attends a public high school with a theatre/musical theatre department. Performed in high school and local community theatre productions.

Summer Programs: Two summer workshops, one drama and one MT, at the local university.

Final Decision: Elon BFA Acting!!!

The first time he tried acting at 14, he was hooked and wanted that to be his career. When he started the application/audition process, both of us were incredibly naïve. We are from a small town in SC that doesn’t offer a lot in terms of training/coaching. We had no idea how competitive this process would be. We thought he would apply to the university, audition, and, if he got into the university, would probably be accepted into the acting program. Boy, did we not have a clue!!! Fortunately, one of his teachers told him that he should really look at a BFA since he wanted to perform and that he should also look at universities out of state. As we started looking and saw the stats of the programs, that was when it started getting real that this is not going to be easy and, based on his background, there was a good chance he wouldn’t get accepted anywhere. He scrambled and started taking every class and auditioning for every show he could for more experience. We didn’t know that coaches existed so he reached out to his teachers and local directors for guidance. Some were helpful; some were not. Bottom line, we started spending hours searching the internet for tips and tricks to applying and auditioning. Because he was way behind the eight ball, he was never going to be able to catch up with the super-talented kids with lots of training/experience but was able to do enough to get some great acceptances. Also, I found CC late summer and everyone’s advice has been a lifesaver!! We are truly blessed with the choices of programs my S was accepted to and are grateful to CC!! Should we have done a lot of things differently? Yes, but we didn’t know any better based on what resources and information we had available in our area. My S is over the moon about Elon and that is ultimately what counts in the end!!

Congratulations! It goes to show that even a kid who started acting in high school, and didn’t have a “national” college coach, can still get into a great BFA program! So happy for him and you!

It also shows the importance of a balanced list, which you definitely had. Great list! The acting kids who get totally shut out are usually the ones who ONLY apply to Juilliard, CMU, Rutgers, etc. With a balanced list, and some high school experience and coaching (could be from a local acting teacher), acting kids usually do find a place, which is wonderful. (Unlike the MT kids - it seems much more brutally competitive for them, with a few CCers getting shut out every year. Heartbreaking for them.)

Thanks @actorparent1!! We were so fortunate to have found the information we did from CC and the internet or the list would not have been as well balanced. When we started, we didn’t know about safeties, reaches, etc. My S is the first in his high school to go to college for acting so even the school counselors couldn’t really offer help.

My heart breaks every time I read the posts about no acceptances or not getting a top choice. These are just 17 and 18 year old kids having to deal with tough rejections. They are so much stronger than I ever was at that age so I am humbled by their resilience.
