Background/Training: Played percussion and was in band from 5th-10th grade; didn’t start acting until age 14; started high school theatre classes as a junior (stopped band); started vocal lessons at 16; started tap lessons at 17. We live in a small town in SC with limited theatre resources so he took the few acting classes that were available and joined a Teen Troupe at a local theatre that meets weekly during the school year to work on acting, singing, dancing. He was a technical theatre intern during a summer for a local theatre. Attends a public high school with a theatre/musical theatre department. Performed in high school and local community theatre productions.
Summer Programs: Two summer workshops, one drama and one MT, at the local university.
Final Decision: Elon BFA Acting!!!
The first time he tried acting at 14, he was hooked and wanted that to be his career. When he started the application/audition process, both of us were incredibly naïve. We are from a small town in SC that doesn’t offer a lot in terms of training/coaching. We had no idea how competitive this process would be. We thought he would apply to the university, audition, and, if he got into the university, would probably be accepted into the acting program. Boy, did we not have a clue!!! Fortunately, one of his teachers told him that he should really look at a BFA since he wanted to perform and that he should also look at universities out of state. As we started looking and saw the stats of the programs, that was when it started getting real that this is not going to be easy and, based on his background, there was a good chance he wouldn’t get accepted anywhere. He scrambled and started taking every class and auditioning for every show he could for more experience. We didn’t know that coaches existed so he reached out to his teachers and local directors for guidance. Some were helpful; some were not. Bottom line, we started spending hours searching the internet for tips and tricks to applying and auditioning. Because he was way behind the eight ball, he was never going to be able to catch up with the super-talented kids with lots of training/experience but was able to do enough to get some great acceptances. Also, I found CC late summer and everyone’s advice has been a lifesaver!! We are truly blessed with the choices of programs my S was accepted to and are grateful to CC!! Should we have done a lot of things differently? Yes, but we didn’t know any better based on what resources and information we had available in our area. My S is over the moon about Elon and that is ultimately what counts in the end!!
