Final chances? -- Super stressed out

This is going to look like a ton of schools, but that's mainly b/c my parents are convinced I'm not getting in anywhere. I'm also really doubting myself now. I have sat down with my GC at school, but I want more opinions than just one person and all these doubters. Thanks in advance!

Demographical Info:
Ethnicity: Japanese

Subjective
Reason for Low GPA: For freshman/sophomore years, I had depression. For junior year, I found out I had slightly autistic tendencies and a learning disorder - not otherwise specified. I had always found socializing and approaching teachers to be a huge challenge. I now have an IEP; however due to my taking lots of APs, it took a really long time to find times I could meet with staff, so it took the whole year and I haven't used it yet. There are a few pass/fails on my transcript - (Precalc H, AP Physics C - 2nd Semester, AP Calculus AB). I've two Cs - Intro to Programming, AP Physics C - 1st semester. Other than that, I've gotten As and Bs.

Choice of Major:
Bioinformatics/Systems Biology/Biomath for schools that have it -- otherwise neuroscience/cog sci

Extracurriculars:
Research: 2012 Siemens Semifinalist, science fairs since 6th grade.
Creative Writing - 3 time NaNoWriMo finisher, participation in writing contests (no awards yet)
Science Olympiad - 2 time participant
Trivia Club - lead bibliographer
Illustration Club - treasurer, co-founder
Cello - Had private lessons + youth orchestra 9th grade, then quit b/c of depression, restarted practicing this year. Made a recording for musical supplement (I've been playing since I was 6).
Volunteering: Volunteered quite a lot for freshman/sophomore years, focused at two organizations. 144 hours total.
Other: NMSQT Commended Scholar, AP Scholar

NOT applying to any early action/decision

Well you are applying to a ton of schools, I would make youre list a little smaller. From the schools I know

BU: Match
Emory: High Match/Low Reach
Standford: Reach (GPA will hurt you)
Wellesley: Low Reach
Rice: Reach
Swarthmore: Low Reach
UC Berkeley: High Match/Low Reach

Yeah… erm it’s a little bit too late to shrink the list…
I’m nearly done with all my apps.

But thanks anyways.

I’m pretty sure my GPA will hurt me wherever I submit my apps.

Hey, that’s quite a list:)
From the ones I know:
Case: Match
BU: Match
Stanford: Reach
UCs: Possible Reach, but bc your SATs are so high (theyre really good:)) and bc youre a CA resident, it is very possible.
WPI: Highly likely
GT: Match

Ik you know your gpa is a tad low, but your sats are great. Your list is quite long and i would recommend not sacrificing your school work this year to do so many apps. Finish the ones that you really like and do as much as you can, but remember to put effort into school this year. Good luck!:)

Thanks! Again, I’m nearly done with apps, so it’s too late to cut down.
5 essays left! (So 3 schools)

Damn that’s a lot of schools haha can’t imagine the cost of all those applications. Also no offense but **** your parents, if anyone should be building you up it is them… they shouldn’t doubt you.

Ill do some:
UC Berkeley- low reach
UCLA- match/low reach
UCSD- high match/safety
UC Davis- match
UC Irvine- match
UC Santa Cruz- high match
UC Riverside (accepted through the GAP program)- safety

Thanks!
Yeah… I wonder if I’m actually going to get new stuff when I actually go to college. Probably using up all that money for these apps. :O

Okay, since my list is pretty huge, I’ve decided that the chances list can be:
University of Puget Sound
Case Western Reserve University
Boston University
Oxford College at Emory/Emory
University of Southern California
Wellesley
Smith College
Georgia Tech
University of Rochester

Basically those are the schools I’m unsure about. The rest are either such high reaches, safeties, or have many data points in my schools’ Naviance.

3.5 GPA and 2280 SATs and your parents don’t think you’re getting in anywhere? That’s nuts. I think you have 34 schools listed. IMO, you’ll get accepted to 27, maybe more. Good luck, and no need to stress.

I think their main concern is that since there’s many test prep things, that it will look like I just paid the vast fees to prepare for the SAT. Plus I’m Asian, and I’ve heard they SUBTRACT points b/c they score too high overall.

Also, a roughly 3.5 GPA without an upward trend is what I’ve got. Junior year was arguably my worst year. That probably looks majorly bad.

Since I can’t edit, I’m also always a disappointment. Not getting the perfect 2400 SAT and 4.0 GPA. I guess their negativity has really done wonders for my obviously sunny disposition.

First off hOLY crap thats a lot of schools!

I’ll chance you for the ones I know about:
DePaul University - safety
Case Western Reserve University - match
Boston University - match
University of Pittsburgh - low match
University of Colorado @ Boulder - safety
University of Southern California - low reach
University of Minnesota @ Twin Cities - match
Carleton College - reach
Stanford - high reach
Wellesley -low reach

UC Berkeley - high match
UCLA - high match
UCSD- match
UC Davis- match
UC Irvine- match
UC Santa Cruz- match

Good luck!

Forget your GPA, forget your background, forget your parents … at least for just one second!

The questions here are:

Where do “you” really want to go?
What would “you” really like to major in?
What about ECs and other things that would make you an ideal student?

Good luck!

As far as I know, with your awesome SAT you can easily get into Wellesley. Georgia Tech seems like a match :)

Wow, these things get old super quickly…
But anyways…

Thanks!
So here are the ones that I actually like, that nobody told me to apply to, I explored them myself:
Baylor University (already accepted) - bioinformatics major
Case Western Reserve University - systems biology major
Boston University - neuroscience
University of Pittsburgh - bioinformatics or neuroscience, not really decided
Worcester Polytechnic Institute - bioinformatics
University of Southern California - computational neuroscience
Stanford - Biomedical Computation OR Symbolic Systems
Wellesley - Neuroscience, Computational Track
Smith College - Neuroscience (or maybe math, there’s a biomath concentration)
Rice University - Cognitive Science
Georgia Tech - Biology or Computer Science (applying as Bio though)
University of Rochester - Brain and Cognitive Sciences
+
UCSD - Bioinformatics or Cognitive Science
UC Santa Cruz - Bioinformatics

These interests are my own – I’ve pretty much had my own say in research since 8th grade, so it reflects my research interests.

I guess I have three major things in regards to ECs: Research, cello, writing. I have some clubs, and my one leadership position is founder/treasurer. I’ve also done some volunteering. If I had to say things that would make me seem like a good student it’s that if I get a big assignment, I start right away and don’t leave it to the last minute, and I organize my past schoolwork.

Wait, so is it true that Georgia Tech only looks at the weighted GPA? What if my school doesn’t show my weighted GPA on my transcript? Looking at my unofficial transcript, it’s not there…

Okay, never mind, I’ll just ask that question on the GTech forum… that’s probably better

These are the schools I am familiar with
Boston University - match
University of Pittsburgh - match
University of Colorado @ Boulder - match
Oxford College at Emory - reach
Emory - reach
University of Southern California - low reach
University of Minnesota @ Twin Cities - match
Stanford - reach
Wellesley - reach
Smith College - reach
Rice University -low reach
Swarthmore College - reach
University of Rochester - low reach
UC Berkeley - reach
UCLA - reach
UCSD - match

ope this helps, you definitely have a really great shot at a lot of the schools.

Okay, thanks!

Your extracurricular accomplishments are quite impressive. Your scores are also very good. However, I think your GPA will keep you out of top schools, unfortunately. Here are my predictions:

Franklin and Marshall College: Accepted
DePauw University: Accepted
