Essays:
*I worked hard on them, so I, and others think they're good, but who knows?

How do you have two different class ranks? They can only submit one, right? Which one will they use? Class rank is the sinlge most important aspect of admission to UT. Either one is good, but submitting two will be kind of confusing to the office of admission. They actually don't really use the GPA at all. The Common Data Set for this year says it's "considered," but there is actually no place in the admission formula to consider it, so I don't know how they do it. "Considered" usually means that it's fairly unimportant. On the ACT, they will only use your English and Math section scores, and not any of the others. Based on those scores, you would have roughly a 1440 SAT. That's over 100 points over the average. Your class rank is top 5-6%, which is also very good.

You've got good ECs and leadership, probably 5 of 6. Based on your ACT score, you'll probably get a 4 average on the essays (it's been shown to be a pretty accurate predictor, though they don't use the essay score). Based on the weight of 4/7 for the ECs and 3/7 for the essays, you should end up with a Personal Achievement Index of a high 4. If your actual essays show that you're significantly better than your ACT scores show, then that could be more like a low 5. That's well above average--the average is 3.5 and 6 is the highest and is very difficult to achieve (you must earn a 6 score on both essays and on your ECs from all readers). So you're pretty good.

I'm also slightly confused about your transcript because there is no such thing as IB Calculus. IB Math is roughly equivalent to a two-year Calc BC course, but there are also some other topics, and there is no IB Calculus Course. I also wasn't aware that you could take IB subjects such as Physics and Psych and Spanish for just one year. I thought all IB courses were two-year courses.

But overall, even though the OOS admission rate is only 30%, I'd say you have a strong chance. As for the reply date, I really can't give you a set in stone date. Exceptional OOS candidates will hear back on a rolling basis, usually within a week or two of completing their file. Otherwise, you will probably have to wait until April.

i dont know when you applied... but at one point i read that OOS students can hear as early as the end of feb. (if all their stuff was in on time)

also i dont get how you would do band for 1 year, and it not even be freshman year... but whatever works.

some OOS applicants have already heard back, it really just depends on how strong your application is.

I submitted mine December 1 and heard back on the 12th. My HS also does two rankings, but on the status page it showed my unweighted one as the official one. They might take the higher of the two.

jeez Cofaloaf, are you instate? You must really be an amazing applicant for them to decide within 12 days that they want you.

Mine took 3, but I was instate and top ten.

S is working on his app online right now. He has been home schooled, so I am guessing it will take longer to evaluate his application. Even so, he should know something sooner than he will from the other schools to which he is applying since none of them have rolling admissions.

With your rank your chances seems pretty good, did you take the SAT? Because from what I've heard rank and SAT are about the only things UT looks at. hopefully you get in. Side question why is your name california lover and you live in oregon and want to go to UT?

Because I like Cali. I want to go to UT because it has really good academics, texas has a lot of med schools in it's state (I want to gain residency there and hopefully get into a med school there) that favor instate applicants, and it has an amazing sports and social scene.
