My UVA essays were the strongest part of my application

i don't get it, UVA is a state school, but its like really hard to get into. Any other state school in this country would JUMP i mean JUMP on a kid with a 1410 and 32 ACT. UVA just blows my mind. It is not that great!. I mean u will get into Michigan with flying colors with those stats.

Just wondering, was your ACT essay better written (in your opinion) than yours on the SAT because an 11 is far better than a 670. Just wondering because I too got an 11 on the ACT writing.

I think it might have been. I didnt focus on using concrete examples but rather proving my opinion on the subject (something really off the wall like if teachers should know their material well or be able to teach it well), so I made a lot of really strong statements. On the other hand, I knew it didnt affect my overall score and I just kind of powered through it without giving it much deep thought. I did get a 10 on the SAT essay though, and have recently begun to consider writing to be my strongest trait (thanks IB). Hope this helps...

Sorry about the UVA deferral - they are really picky about grades.

I like the rest of your list - you should have good options in the spring.

Advice - work as hard as you can on great midyear grades - they will be considered. Also .... Chicago really does consider the essays. Take them seriously.

i love how ppl say stuff about chicago when A) they never applied, B) they didn't get in, C) have no clue what they are talking about. I was admitted to Chicago after being deferred in the EA round. Let me give you some advice. Do not necessarily feel compelled to answer the essay questions they give us, you can do Essay 5 the optional version, and craft one urself. Not only does that show more creativity on your part, but allows you to write in your own comfort level, not about some mustard.

bball87,
my son is currently a first-year. Essay 5 is certainly a valid option. Although the write a page about yourself one this year is pretty wide open.

U Chicago is moderate reach (about 30%). From what I have seen, U Chicago is fairly liberal (professors and students) - just keep that in mind if you are conservative.

The previous poster is correct about choosing essay option 5 if it is best for you. As long as your personality comes through, whatever topic you choose is fine. It doesn't have to be quirky-intellectual, as many other posters seem to think.

Thanks for the thought about the political slant of Chicago. It is the only school on my list I have yet to visit, but I was really drawn to the mentality that they convey through their emphasis on writing. It seemed to fit the type of thinker I am very well.

Might try some good Patriot League Schools like Holy Cross, Bucknell or Lafayette. Holy Cross has a very nice campus with brand new $4 million baseball stadium ant the campus is only 1 hour from Boston.

U Chicago: Reach
Vanderbilt: Reach
Wake Forest: Match
William and Mary: Slight Reach
U Maryland: Safe Match
Virginia Tech: Safe Match
Madison: Safety

You can go to Wake Forest even w/ money concerns. Tuition plus room and board is around $38000, but look at this: AVG percent rewarded aid based on need: 92%. AVG financial aid package: $22000. There are plenty of ways to go to your no. 1 w/o having the money...student loans, merit money, reward based aid, etc. Get off this website and go find some more scholarships! Best of luck!
