Thanks!!!

I think you have an excellent shot.

Thank you! The main problem is my family can only afford $35,000 a year, so financial aid is critical to going there.

Have you run your family income through the financial aid calculators to see what your Expected Family Contribution will be?

Also, what do you plan on studying – if you’re NYS and there’s a program in CALS, Human Ecology or ILR, the tuition is MUCH cheaper.

Oh wow i forgot to include that lol

I’m applying to the Cornell College of Engineering intending to do Engineering Physics.

Any yea, we tried the cornell financial aid calculator correctly and gave us around $25,000 in financial aid, which is enough, but when my dad called the cornell financial aid office yesterday, he was told we would receive $0 in aid, but when i called today, the lady i spoke to said the calculator is extremely accurate and said the woman my dad talked to is unqualified in giving financial aid estimates -_- we’re trying to figure out what the deal is

I believe that the calculators are reasonably accurate.

Also – I believe that if a school does not meet your financial need, you can legitimately back out an early decision acceptance. What this actually means is somewhat complicated so talk to your guidance counselor. However, if the School’s Financial Aid calculator says $25,000 in Fin Aid, and they actually offered significantly less than this, you might have a strong argument. As i say, talk to your GC.

I’m no engineer but your math scores seem low compared to my friends in engineering-most had 800s on their SAT2 maths and better than 700 on the SAT 1. Your ACT math is good but the disparity in testing is disconcerting.

^ Well a 780 is different by probably 1 maybe 2 questions. I dont think that’ll be a problem. But wont my 35 in ACT Math as well as my AMC 12 score and rensselaer medalist prove my ability in math anyway?

IthacaKid –

OP’s SAT math is perhaps a touch low, but certainly in the range where he’s qualified. His ACT is off the charts and is more than enough to get in anywhere.

If you apply early, I’d put your chances at around 60%.

@Cortana-The Math 2 is curved bizarrely. I got a 770 and was only 81st percentile. There are so many questions that you’re allowed to miss and still be above 750 and even at 800 there exists a range such that a score below that is suspect for top engineering programs. As for AMC-my friends here actually made AIME so IDK how relevant that is.
@zephyr-his score is good yeah. Great even. But more than enough to get in anywhere is a baldface lie. Certainly at the upper range for the school. But a ticket in? No.

IthacaKid –

We agree!! When I say “more than enough to get in” I mean that if you’re rejected it won’t be because of the score, not that it’s an ‘automatic’. I can see how my words were ambiguous, though. Thans for correcting them.

bump! more input is helpful!

bummpppppp Also Am applying to Cooper Union and Rice University

Just wanted to let you know that Rice has very stringent admissions. My son got in Cornell, but not Rice – even though he took a college summer school class at Rice after his junior year of high school. He earned an A+ and set the curve for the class. Rice places great value on the essay, on the interview, and on demonstrated interest in the school. Visit if you can, or at least have an alumni interview. Females have a better chance in engineering and hard sciences than males. (What else is new?) Good news is you are coming from a different part of the country and would contribute to diversity on the campus. Nice campus, great residential college system, but prepare yourself for the miserably hot weather we’ve been having! It’s just now cooling down from 100-degree heat. In any case, it worked out great for us, since my son really didn’t want to stay in this area and has been aiming for the northeast since middle school. We’ll see if he’s singing the same tune in January!

Forgot to mention RPI. You have a great shot to get money there! My son was offered a very generous merit scholarship there. He was not a medalist, although I was back in the day! (I wouldn’t have been at his school, which is full of very talented science and math whizzes.)

thanks for the advice! i forgot that Rice is in one of the hottest regions of the U.S. I prefer the cold weather in cornell and RPI and buffalo :)
