Wow, @EastchesterMom & @CentralOHmomof4 -thank you for the great info. We had never heard of the program at this point last year-but D has it on her list this year!
@owensfolks - we hadnāt heard of it either (it was brand-new at the time) until a CC mom mentioned it. D didnāt have a good audition season (boy, if we knew then what we know now!) so when she got a yes from Molloy/CAP 21, she grabbed it. And they all lived happily ever after! And I have tried to pay it forward ever since. BAL to your D with auditions!
I live in RVC, which is where Molloy is located (we are literally down the block!). I will have a hard time convincing my daughter to apply there b/c she has been away at a performing arts school outside Boston for HS and Iām sure she doesnāt want to ācome homeā for college, LOL. But itās a great program so I hope she applies!
@El-Cee - I hope she does, too, but i think you have 2 strikes against you alreadyā¦performing arts school in Boston and home in RVC. Ask her to apply to make her poor mom happy. Then letās see what happensā¦ The Molloy/CAP 21 magic is legendary already. To meet us is to love us!
I would love to have her close and will try to convince her to apply, we plan to cast a wide net anyway since she is BFA-or-bust. I would love to come see a show at Molloyā¦ can you tell me about their upcoming season and maybe a link to any show schedules that have been released? TIA! And glad your daughter is so happy. Iāll say one thing - they should put you on the payroll!
@El-Cee - your timing is impeccable. Next weekend, the Molloy/CAP21 senior class proudly presents āInto the Woodsā at the Madison Theatre. 10/28 at 2 and 8 , 10/29 at 3. Upperclassmen are cast in shows at the Madison all the time. Check out the schedule online - I donāt remember the web address offhand, but thereās a link at Molloy.edu.
Can anyone tell me how walk-ins work at Unifieds? If you havenāt applied to the college, itās confusing to me how you can go ahead and walk into an audition.
@collegemom2000 The schools taking walk-ins generally have a sign-up sheet with open time slots. Some will have you fill out a form that is not an application but something that provides the applicants general info and some are fine with just the resume and headshot. If the audition goes well and there is interest most schools will encourage the auditioner to immediately go to the college web site and complete an application. My daughter did a few walk-ins last year and ended up getting accepted to two programs and waitlisted at another. Even a few colleges that generally audition by prescreen only were taking walk-ins in Los Angeles which I found really astonishing. Itās a great opportunity to test out programs you might not have considered with zero pressure!
My D decided to attend the University Of Arizona BFA MT program. After attending Unifieds, and being accepted at a couple of āprestigiousā NY schools, she found U of A quite by accident. A happy accident indeed. It was only through a walk-in audition at the Los Angeles Unifieds that my D even discovered Arizona. Hank Stratton and Danny Gurwin showed great encouragement from the first moment of the audition process, and they - along with many other talented and notable professors - have continued their positivity through their creation of a magical program. My D has the same, or similar stories as most of the prospective students that I read about on this site: full resumes and loads of fine training. There are so many programs out there for all the hopefuls. I wish we had known about this exceptional program earlier (my D actually committed elsewhere first - so some hassle there). We saw our first production over the recent Parents Weekend and it exceeded expectations. The acting, music, talent, directing, theater, etc. was all wonderful. My husband and I were delighted at how many people in the crowd were season ticket holders from the Tucson area, and who have followed their favorite student actors through their years at UofA. Although the Freshman Class participates behind the scenes on the first semester main productions, my D and her classmates are engaged and challenged by their experiences. And they create their own show in December! These professors have created a cohesive class group who bolster each other, and who are excited to learn their craft. As a parent, I want to encourage all of you to investigate this program. Being in the community of young performers, I have heard a great deal of stories from students in various BFA MT programs. What is striking about Arizona, is that these professors seem to consider each student and help them grow their unique talent. This in contrast to what I have heard about many programs churning out carbon copy type performers. We went in not knowing if this would be the right fit - and are over-the-moon about how genuinely wonderful the U of A isā¦ This may just be working up to being the program to beat! Again, check out this program, Danny Gurwin, Hank Stratton, et.al!
@JaneDo I have to echo everything you said about UofA and the people there. My son ultimately chose another program, but he loved these guys and everything he saw at UofA. It is definitely an up-and-comer, and Iāve been telling everyone we encounter who are on this journey about Hank and Danny and what they are building. I was stuck over and over again by exactly what you said - they are truly focused on the individual and how to provide exactly what each young artist needs. Plus they landed this yearās Jimmy winner! And even though my son is at another school (and very happy), our entire family remains huge fans of this theater department.
Thank you so much @CentralOHmomof4 for sharing your story. My DD is applying now and I find the whole process terrifying! Iām so happy to hear that your DD landed somewhere she loves.
PS - My DD just applied to Molloy/CAP 21
@MTMOM17 No problem - happy to share, in case we can help anyone else who was in the same boat. We had noooo idea what to expect -
this was new territory. D is incredibly happy at Molloy/CAP21, as are her classmates. Break legs to your D!!
@MTMOM17 My daughter just applied at Molloy and we were hoping to schedule her Cap21 audition during Unifieds but wowā¦is the Broadway address the new location? That is so far from where we will be I canāt imagine it is possible to do Unifieds and CAP21 in the same day.
@collegemom2000, Iām not sure but I thought itās located at 18 18th Street, New York, NY, between 5th and 6th. Let me know if you hear differently because we planned to schedule my daughterās during Unifieds too.
@MTMOM17 @collegemom2000 - The CAP21 Manhattan center is at 26 Broadway!
Thank you, @EastchesterMom! I looked at this website
http://www.cap21.org/cap21/about/contact/, but I guess it has the wrong address.
Thanks @EastchesterMom , thatās what I thought. Itās rather far from Unifieds (looks like at least a 30 minute ride plus whatever walking, etc. involved.) Iām worried the distance may be a problem.
I donāt know where Unifieds isā¦so I canāt comment about a 30-minute trip. Spring for a cab and I doubt itāll take that long.
The 18th Street address is the former home of CAP21. The Broadway address is temporary until the brand new studios are finished and ready.
Anyone who is auditioning at 26 Broadway should know that Alexander Hamilton used to live in a house that occupied that address. The current building is the Standard Oil Buildingā¦but prior to that, the area was residential and highly desirable. Hamilton lived there for several years.
The trip to/ from Unifieds will take at least 30 minutes, but with traffic and delays I would leave at least an extra 20 minutes extra.
