FINAL DECISIONS, THEATER/DRAMA MAJORS, CLASS OF 2020

Thank you everyone! We are excited

Congrats on UNCSA @bfahopeful ! That is my dream school and I love hearing that people on CC are getting in!

@WhiteRaven1 are you applying next year? My daughter didn’t realize how great it was until she went to the info session during auditions. Sold right there. Thank you!

Thanks guys! And yes I’m waiting on the waitlist and the financial aid for the schools before I decide. It’s amazing knowing that anything can happen if you work hard enough. @svamom @bfahopeful

@bfahopeful Yes! I’ve been doing some research on UNSCA and I talked to a current student here on CC who could only say great things about the program. I actually live in Virginia so I hope to visit the school soon for a tour and to sit in on some classes!

@whiteraven1 - my daughter just got back from a visit and she was nothing but impressed. Good luck heading into all this. Sounds like you are on top of it already.

COLLEGES APPLIED TO: Chapman, USC, Xavier, Mount Saint Mary’s LA, UC

REJECTED: USC

ACCEPTED: Chapman, Xavier, Mount Saint Mary’s LA, U of Cincinnati (but for journalism)

FINAL DECISION: Chapman University BFA Class of 2020!

“It’s a great way to celebrate final decisions as well as to stay in touch with other kids/parents who are going to be at the same college, and also provides great insight into each person’s journey. It’s been so wonderful having everyone on this forum for support!”

USERNAME: Jbeansmom (Daughter)

BACKGROUND: school theater, community theater summer “camps” in elementary, a couple community theater main stage productions, singing lessons… caught the acting bug at 7. Public HS – in advanced (production) theater class since freshman year, also comedy improv team for 3 years.

SUMMER INTENSIVES: Two different HS summers – one week performing arts/musical theater camps (different camps)

COACHING/TRAINING: None, other than school teachers and other directors and the camps. Also singing lessons on and off for about 8 years.

COLLEGES APPLIED TO: Boston U (ended up having to send video audition), Carnegie Mellon, Chapman, Columbia College Chicago, DePaul, Emerson, Northwestern, University of Oklahoma, University of Southern California, University of Texas at Austin, Vassar, Yale

*OU and UT got on the list after realizing that she would probably be a National Merit Finalist (huge scholarship at OU) and we found out we’re moving to TX…mom and dad suggested she may want an option closer to home.

REJECTED: BU, Carnegie Mellon, DePaul, Northwestern, Vassar, Yale

ACCEPTED: Chapman (BFA Screen Acting), Columbia College, Emerson (BFA Theater and Performance), OU (BFA Drama), USC (BA Theater), UT Austin (BFA Acting)

FINAL DECISION: UT Austin! She was nominated by the College of Fine Arts for the Forty Acres Scholarship (merit based) and she got it! It is a full ride! She’s excited about the school, the other “scholar” kids, the town and the looks of the BFA Acting program.

ADVICE: Cast a fairly wide net and remain open minded. I was proud of my D trying to remain open to all possibilities. Some schools that seemed so fantastic at the beginning lost a little luster, and others that didn’t seem as appealing in the beginning gained interest as certain aspects became known (like scholarships, etc).

Omg @jbeansmom THATS AWESOME NEWS! Congrats!!!

A full ride?!? That is phenomenal!! Congratulations @jbeansmom this is wonderful news!

raise the roof @jbeansmom and a “well done” to your D. Beat the drum: grades matter!

Yes, that’s phenomenal, and so much film going on in Austin, too.

Thank you, @svamom @bisouu @artskids and @Jkellynh17 ! We’re all thrilled. It’s kind of crazy how this has all progressed – from my first look at CC, to the beginnings of our research, to building a very diverse list of schools, to getting all the applications and auditions complete, to things falling into place in a way I wouldn’t have imagined a year or two ago. We’re feeling good about all the opportunities that lie ahead!

USERNAME:
mpartist

BACKGROUND:
Public high school with strong theatre program (lots of performances from Shakespeare to Shrek), improv, a cappella, solo choir, local summer theatre, internships. SAT 2010, GPA 3.7

SUMMER INTENSIVES:
None

COACHING/TRAINING:
College audition coach, 3 years voice lessons University of Hartford

COLLEGES APPLIED TO:
CMU, Julliard, USC, UNCSA, BU, PACE, Occidental, LMU, Chapman, Drew, UCONN, Western CT State University

REJECTED:
Withdrew application from CMU before audition (just knew that he didn’t want to go there), Julliard, USC

ACCEPTED:
All the rest, with some nice financial options!

FINAL DECISION: Chapman

ADVICE: College audition coach was a huge help, not sure how prepared my S. would have been for the process without that! He picked ALL schools that he would be happy with, because we had no idea if he would have choices or not…you never know how it will go! Read everything you can on college confidential! My S. had a great attitude (I wish I could say that I was as chill as he was, but I wasn’t.) He enjoyed the process, visiting the schools, did the best he could, had fun, and let go of the outcome!

Congrats @jbeansmom - fantastic! And to @Mpartist too! Great options! Sad he didn’t pick UNCSA though. Our kids wold be classmates.

USERNAME: kelseylanelle

BACKGROUND: Public high school w/ strong performing arts department, 4 yrs of IB Theatre, internship with local theatre company, 2 Year President of Int’l Thespian Society, local summer theatre; 2080 SAT, 32 ACT, 4.41 GPA

SUMMER INTENSIVES: None

COACHING/TRAINING: None outside of in school theatre – had the two directors of my theatre program at my school critique my monologues before auditions, but that’s it!

COLLEGES APPLIED TO: (So many good Lord this process was just the worst.) UT Austin, SMU, UNCSA, Rutgers, Carnegie Mellon, Pace, Boston U, NYU

REJECTED: UT Austin, SMU, UNCSA, Rutgers, Carnegie Mellon, Pace, Boston U

ACCEPTED: NYU

FINAL DECISION: Well…I was left with one option! But absolutely no complaints here, because it was my top choice (and has been for years!) at that! NYU!!!

ADVICE: It isn’t over until it’s over. NYU was my last audition AND my last school to hear from. After seven rejections, I was feeling so defeated. But as they say, the Lord works in mysterious ways. And if it is meant to be, it WILL be. You have to trust in that, no matter how hard it may be.

Also – a quote from my director: “Remember, it’s about compatibility, not talent. The results of these auditions do not determine who you are or how good you are. They determine how well you fit in one place or another.” <-- Something I think EVERYONE auditioning for BFA/BA programs need to remember.

I’m incredibly thankful and so excited for what the next four years hold! Still in shock…congrats to all of you, as well!

Wow, what a roller coaster you’ve been on. Congratulations!

@kelseylanelle - congrats!! My D is a sophomore at NYU, don’t hesitate to ask if you have questions!!

Congrats everyone! And @jbeansmom if you have any Austin questions send me a PM!

Thank you, @austinmt I’ll keep that in mind!
