Final Exam Request

Okay, so I really NEED to take 2 classes my first semester. The first being E7 (Matlab) and the second being CE30 (Intro to Solid Mechanics). I can fit both into my schedule just fine BUT there are 2 sections of E7 (12-1, 1-2) and BOTH sections are taking the final at the same time (the 1-2 slot/Final Exam Group 12) which conflicts with the final exam time of CE30.

What are the chances that the CE30 teacher (Armero) will allow me to re-schedule for his final?

Pretty slim. They don’t like rescheduling finals at Cal. There’s a chance Telebears will kick you or disallow registration because of conflicting final times as it is.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question…

Darn. That really sux for me. I’m a transfer student and the number of classes for which can enroll in the Spring is severely limited without both those classes (there are only 2 classes I can take in Spring '10 without having completed both E7 and CE 30).

What happens in that scenario–when I can’t have a full-time schedule because I don’t have the pre-req’s to be enrolled in the other classes that I need?
Do I just take “fun” classes?

And how does that effect me when I’m supposed to finish all my classes in 4 semesters (max 5) and I’m basically losing a whole semester because of a conflict with one test?

Just take the class and its pre-req together. You’ll have to ask for the instructor’s permission to do this, but most of the time they’ll okay it.

Be prepared to work hard if you decide to take a class and its pre-req in the same semester.

I believe most engineering majors take CS 61A as an alternative course for E 7 (I’m not sure, you should double check). CS 61A might fit your finals schedule. Just so you know, CS 61A is generally considered harder than E 7

Thanks for the suggestion. That totally fits in my schedule. I’ll make sure to ask the adviser at CalSO if I can do that, but I’ve heard other students mention that CS 61A and E 7 are pretty much the same thing w/ 61A being a little more difficult.

Hopefully that will work!
Thanks again.
