Final Exam schedule

My daughter just finished her orientation yesterday. It was very well organized and she had a good time. She has registered for 17 credits. I was looking up her final exam schedule in http://www.umich.edu/~regoff/exams/fall.html

and I have a few questions. Can we rely on this as gospel and buy flight tickets etc? Is there any way she can get one of her exams preponed? She is registered for Great Books 191 and the final exam is supposed to be on Fri Dec 22. We were hoping to make an international trip during the Dec break to attend a wedding. We will not be able to do that if she has exams till 22nd. Does anybody have any experience/input on taking the exams earlier that the posted schedule.

Thanks

The exam schedules are set in stone, and in general you're only allowed to take them at a different time if you have conflicting exams. If your daughter talks to her GSI at the very beginning of the school year and explains the situation, they might be able to arrange a different exam time, but I wouldn't count on it.

Is "preponed" even a word? Dictionary.com does not seem to think so, but props for widening the scope of the English language.

"prepone" is a word and it is a verb - it has to have a past tense!

This is not good news about the exams - I guess we just have to live it with then.

Thanks

I wouldn't count on it. For example, in my Spanish classes last year, we could NOT take an exam early. We could only take it on the alternate test date if necessary (a.k.a. 3 or more exams on one date or conflicting exams).

It's especially a concern with Great Books, because it's easy for someone who has taken the test early to pass on what the exam was about. You're basically given something like 8 passages from books and you have to write about 5. There was a big issue last year because apparently one of the GSIs more or less told their kids what was going to be on the midterm, and it spread around to most of the Honors college (since nerly everybody lives together is SQ) and they ended up having to come up with a new midterm the night before.

Rather than move the exam time, is there any flexibility in her schedule? Can the course be taken 2nd semester or can she switch sections giving her a different exam day/time? BTW, 17 credits is a challenging course load for a new frosh, IMO.

Hmmm... I had originally looked up the word "prepone" in the dictionary and could not find it. But I can see that that's not what this thread is about haha. I'm actually looking forward to great books this upcoming semester

I opted out of Great Books for Greek Civ.

History/Culture > Literature.

does anyone really care if the word prepone exists?

IMO, knowledge of literary classics is a lot better than knowledge about culture/events of a time period.

don't book the flight tickets early, and its more expensive now. Professors will usually give u a choice of taking it earlier, ie. on the last day of class, only if everyone in the class agrees to it, i've had this happen a few times.

We will have to buy tickets now. Flights to India in Dec get booked really early. I think we just might have to book it for 22nd from Detroit.

She really wants to take Great Books and not Ancient civilizations and as one of these is required for the honors program, she cannot opt out.

Is 17 credits really too much? She is taking 4 classes + UROP. Her schedule does look awfully busy though, with classes every day of the week. I was hoping she would have either Mon or Fri free, but she said that was impossible.

It can be difficult to get days off, especially as a freshmen. I think one semester my shortest day was one with 3 hours of class.

Great Books I is only offered first semester. I guess she could in theory just take Great Books first semester second year, though that might prevent her from doing Great Books II second semester.

Assuming some of those credits are UROP (and not 17 credits+UROP), I think 17 credits is doable for most honors students. But it's more work than most people have, so if your daughter really wants to make sure she has time for social things and ECs and all that stuff, she might want to go down to 15-16 credits.

hey.. im in a similar situation too !! need to get back for my sisters wedding to india during the exams.. reallyy dont know what to do.. do they really allow you to take the exams before ?? any help would be appreciated.. in a real mess..

Thanks, GoBlueMom... Most excellent information. Now I just have to find out if my first year seminar in Classic Civ 120 (Lost and Found in the Mediterranean) has a final. I read on another post that about 40% of the first year seminars don't have a final. Anyone know about this class taught by Netta Berlin?

lampard,

usually they are pretty strict about finals..but you need to talk to your profs like the first week of class and tell them about your situation...they maybe able to do something.
