Alright so I was wondering if this is a solid list of schools that you all think I should apply to be guaranteed at least one school and possibly get some options?
* Purdue U
* U Arizona
* U Illinois Urbana
* U Maryland Coll Park
* U Mass Amherst
* U Minn Twin Cities
* U Washington
* U Wis Madison

GPA : 3.15uw
SAT :
Math - 700
CR - 660
W - 610

Did not take SAT II's

Mediocre EC's with one being MIT-Harvard Math Competition / Captain / High Scorer

Amazing Recs

Location : California

Intended Major : Computer Science (except at Illinois which i would apply for Math/CompSci in the LAS school not CompSci in engineering)

Is this a solid list or should I add more safeties or another couple of schools that would offer something that I have not foreseen...looking for some fun schools with strong compsci programs.

Purdue-match
Illinois-reach (but could still see you getting in)
Arizona-safety/match (not sure cuz your OOS)
Wisconsin-reach
Maryland-reach
Washington-dont know
Minnesota-high match/reach

really john? argg...remember im applying for compsci not comp engineering so for some of the schools im not applying to the engineering department.... like at maryland for example - and illinois

thanks though, what other schools would you suggest as safeties?

That's a solid list. Honestly your GPA will make you a difficult sell for some of the most selective schools, but there are a lot good options that you have there. With University of Maryland remember to apply "Early Action". I applied a day or so after the deadline, and didn't pay the fee for a few more months, and ended up getting shocked with a rejection (my stats are in the same league as yours).

I'm sure you can get into the schools you listed, but here are some more that you might want to research:

Case Western Reserve (A lot of my friends are going there).

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (might be a reach for you)

Rochester Institute of Technology (a good safety for you. CO-OP oriented program where you work at local companies your junior/senior years)

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (I'm going there 08. Project oriented system. Lots of freedom in class schedules. Allows you to cross register with nearby liberal arts college)

Rose Hulman Institute of Technology (bat**** expensive)

illinois is competitive just on its own and so is maryland. being an out of state student makes it a lot more competitive. I definitely could see you getting into at least one of those schools (probably more). As for safeties
what about the University of San Diego (not the UC) or a California State school, generally safety schools are schools in your own state because applying to out of state schools is really unpredictable.

Updated list
* Indiana U Blooming
* Purdue U
* U Arizona
* U Illinois Urbana
* U Maryland Coll Park
* U Mass Amherst
* U Minn Twin Cities
* U Washington
* U Wis Madison

I know you want to get out of California, but I would still apply to at least once school in-state. Out of the schools you list, I see Indiana U - Bloomington, Purdue, and U of Arizona as safeties of safe matches. Probably Maryland too. Also, how is your financial situation as all the schools are out-of-state publics which will cost a lot.

i dont think they will cost too much considering their oos is less than any private school admission costs - hopefully financial aid will cut it down even further? my financial situation is..not good..but because im an independent and im 18 my FASFA is gonna get me some good offers methinks...maybe...?

Are you sure you will be recognized as an independent according to FAFSA guidelines? Also since these are state schools they generally are not going to provide the kind of FA you might need as an out of state student. I would recommend looking into that aspect of your search a bit more.

most of the schools offer around $10,000 in aid - which will be sufficient .. if i have $40,000-$70,000 in debt after the 4 years thats definitely manageable.

this is also why im applying to so many schools - not only to broaden my opportunities of potential schools but also to have potentially better financial offerings

Check out Colorado School of Mines, Stevens Institute, New Mexico Tech, and U of Missouri S&T.

No offense, but you need a reality check. $70k in debt is way too much.
But a school like Case Western might put you in even more debt than that with only $10k a year in aid.
Also, your stats could use improvement. Re-take the SAT, take the ACT (you may do better on that...I know it is not a California thing), take the SATIIs (especially Math 2C).
Please keep the UCs as a safety at least. There is nothing wrong with the UCs.
Finally, it is too soon to have a 'final' list. You've got months to go.

Just a few comments. First, apply early in the fall for the schools with rolling admissions. October would be a good time to turn everything in. Also, Univ of Illinois is very expensive for out of state. It is almost $30,000 per year for tuition. Wisconsin is more reasonably priced. You could also look into the Canadian schools since you don't seem to be adverse to the cold.

Looks like you have you final list then. Glad to hear that a CS major doesn't make you a nerd.
And U Arizona is definitely a not-California.
Best on your list is U of Illinois Champaign Urbana.
Best of luck to you.
