[] Teacher Recs:…hmm, I assume pretty good. But I do not know, especially from my English teacher because I’m pretty quiet in her class (and she is literally overflowing with letter requests)
[] Counselor Rec: okay, I think she has to do like 130 of them so maybe not the most personal…
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): one on campus—good, not amazing (very nervous), another in Starbucks—felt relaxed, conversational, but we didn’t really connect on any subjects
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): Just my love of art, and my digital art portfolio (which I don’t think they received…)
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: ^____^ Thus is life. I'm happy I had good friends to ease me into this (is numb from a day of Starbucks, singing, and painting her heart out*) I'm not very confident for regular decisions, but BRING IT ON!!

Special notes:

@inkspill--I knew it! :) Congrats--you really deserve it.
@fringey--Don't worry. You'll find the school just right for you, and fall in love. I know it. ^___________^

btw, that code is horrendously complicated! xD

WHY YOU BELIEVE IT TURNED OUT THE WAY IT DID: Some luck, but I'm really happy!!!

I refrained from doing any of the formatted quantitative stuff because really because it can really twist the decisions things... but that's CC for you, I guess. For those accepted, fantastic, I do hope you come to Yale, let me know if you have any questions or find me on my website... for those deferred, have faith, please remember that you still have a fine chance of admission in RD, and to those of you who were rejected, I'm very sorry that things did not work out but that does NOT mean that you're not as good or better than many a Yale student, and it DOES mean that there are still lots of great places and opportunities for you which I hope you will pursue and use to your advantage.

[] SAT I (by section): 800 800 800
[] SAT IIs: 800 US History, 800 Math II, 770 Physics, 720 Math I
[] GPA, Weighted and Unweighted: 3.98 UW, 4.22 W
[] Rank: 1/455 (though school doesn't technically release ranks...my guidance counselor might have hinted at it in her letter)
[] ACT: -
[] APs (including this year's): World History (5), US History (5), Physics B (5) This year: Physics C, Gov, English Literature, Italian, Computer Science A, Calc BC
[] IBs (including this year's: -
[] Senior Yr Courseload: AP Physics C, Italian Independent Study, AP Computer Science, AP Calculus BC, AP Gov with Regular Economics & Freshmen Mentoring, AP English Literature, Chorus
[] Number of Apps from Your School: 2 EA, but one was a gymnast who's athletic "in" didn't go through with the coach, so she considers herself completely out of the running
[] Other stats (Awards, etc.): Lots of MUN awards from Harvard, University of Chicago, Rutgers. National Merit Semifinalist. National Italian Exam Honorable Mention (9-11). Gold Medalist at the Long Island Math Fair (9-10).
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Model UN, Mathletes (VP), World Language Honor Society (Prez), National Honor Society (Treasurer), Nassau County Math All-Star Team, Key Club
[] Job/Work Experience: Camp Counselor, Math Tutor, Babysitting
[] Essays (subject and responses): Both "topic of my choice"...one was on my MUN experience and how I grew from it (it was mildly humorous...began with me walking into a pole), other was on my love of math from childhood on. They weren't extraordinary or outstandingly unique...well written, yes, and mildly entertaining but nothing "wow"
[] Teacher Recs: Read one and nearly cried, didn't read the other 2. Probably really, really, really sweet...and probably a big reason I got in.
[] Counselor Rec: No idea. Good, maybe? Public school so probably didn't spend too long on it.
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): Didn't have one in an alum-heavy area. And I still got in. Amazed.
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): None!
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: New York
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Good Public, don't know average SAT, but we typically get a few into Cornell/Dartmouth/maybe Brown every year. No non-athlete Yalies, though!!
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Above where we'll get probably get financial aid but still low enough that paying for it won't be easy
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None!
[] Strengths: Scores mainly, and probably recs. Debate stuff might have helped as well, since I'm a potential math major but it showed me to be well-rounded.
[] Weaknesses: Standard ECs, lack of hooks, no above-and-beyond academic achievements, practically no community service
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: My scores, I guess, though that doesn't seem like enough. Perhaps the fact that my essays/ECs, while not outstanding, showed that I wasn't a robot. I was a normal teenage girl who worked at a camp because she liked it, someone who could laugh at themselves for colliding unceremoniously with a pole. But honestly? I was fully expecting to be deferred, this is just a shock.[/li][/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
Congrats to everyone!! For those who are reading this in the future...its ok not to have it all. You don't absolutely "need" a hook, or to have changed the world.

I normally wouldn't have posted, but this is for those of you who think we're underqualified. How's THAT for a URM? Admittedly not the type of URM most schools look for, which is why I personally disagree with AA, but stop overgeneralizing.

[] Senior Yr Courseload: Chinese 5/6 (Independent Study), Chemistry (school offers no honors or AP Chemistry), Drawing (graduating requirement due to UC system), AP Calculus AB, AP English Literature and Composition, American Democracy and Government/Economics (school offers no honors or AP Government or Economics)
[] Number of Apps from Your School: No other early applicant to ANY school except me.
[li] Other stats (Awards, etc.): California Legislature Assembly Certificate of Recognition for Balboa JROTC Battalion Commander, University of San Francisco School of Law Street Law Completion Certificate, California Mock Trial San Francisco City and County Championship Team, Various JROTC awards, most notably: Superior Cadet Award, National Sojourners Award, Scottish Rites Award.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Mock Trial 10-12 (Varsity Trial Attorney, Varsity Team Captain), Army JROTC 9-11 (Battalion Commander, Battalion Trainings and Operations Officer), School Newspaper 9-10 (Opinions Page Editor and Regular Contributor), Political Science Club 10 (will continue mock trial involvement, newspaper, and political science in college with political science as a major and law school in the future)
[] Job/Work Experience: Peer Educator and Facilitator at Diversity Works (2002-2005) and Summer Clerkship at Munger, Tolles & Olson under attorneys, partners, and paralegals.
[] Essays (subject and responses): I wrote my short answer essay about my interest in the law and what I've done to make that career path a choice: law academy, mentorships with Bar Association, mock trial, clerkship at a major law firm. My first essay was about my epiphany that got me into the law (how I was first awed and amazed by it) and how I made it come true; it also goes into great detail about my experience in mock trial and how it really helped me mature and grow stronger as a person from my meek freshman year to the confident, down-to-earth, won't shut up kind of guy that I am now. My second essay goes into detail about my epiphany, becoming who I am, and my maturation as a person.
[] Teacher Recs: My first recommendation is from my Law Academy History teacher who wrote about my personal characteristics and life outside of school, as he's also the teacher sponsor and coach of mock trial. My second recommendation is from my Law Academy English teacher who wrote about my traits in the classroom and lectures. He also talks about my personal traits outside of the classroom as well.
[] Counselor Rec: She wrote about my involvement with the school, the community, and how I juggle a lot of things and get stuff done nonetheless.
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): I had my interview done downtown in a bar in the large Hyatt by the Embarcadero. It was a very interesting and great interview, as he is involved in the legal career as well. It went pretty well; we ended up talking for an hour and a half.
[li] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): No one has ever applied to Yale from my school before. In addition, no one has ever been to a major ranking university outside of the UC system. For a while, my high school didn't have anyone going to college. Last year was the first year that anyone applied to an Ivy (valedictorian applied to Harvard) but she got outright rejected. This year, many more are applying to Ivies but none are applying to HYP sans one other person.
[/li]

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: California, United States
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Public, never sends students to top schools outside of the UC system (Berkeley, LA).
[] Ethnicity: Asian -- Taiwanese
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Middle class ($75,000)
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation of applicants to HYP, Ivies, or top colleges.
[] Strengths: GPA, rank, extracurriculars, leadership positions, essays
[] Weaknesses: SAT
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I expected either deferral for the most part. My SAT scores put me in the bottom 50% of the applicant pool, I believe. However, I like to believe that everything else is solid. Thus, I believe they've deferred me for the following reason. In addition, I doubt they wanted to deny me because they've never had people apply there from my school. They sent student ambassadors to come and visit and whatnot. I think some "politicking" was involved but I really do believe that I could and did stand my own in the early applicant pool and hopefully in the regular pool as well.
[/li]

[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Good-luck everybody! I'm going to send them some additional things. I'm definitely rooting for all of you that have been deferred as well. I checked it in front of my class on the projection screen in Government and it was really nerve-wracking. I hope that didn't happen to any of you guys. We'll make it someplace and we'll do extraordinarily well. I've had a blast meeting all of you and talking to you here; you guys rock!

Rank: Top 4 percent for sure
GPA: near mid 4's i think, all A's in high school with many Ap's/H's
AP Scores: 6 5's
Strong ec's, such as newspaper and boy scouts (eagle scout) with significant leadership. Two advanced courses at local community college as well.
Research at NASA for two summers. Carried out and presented project to committee.
Essays: solid
Interview: solid
Recs: counselor is very, very strong; teachers are pretty strong too i think
Male Asian, CA
Scool info: one other person was recruited at yale for swimming

I'm not going to read into my decision. To anyone deferred or rejected, a simple form letter is in NO way a validation of your intrinsic worth as a human being. College admissions is a crapshoot. No matter what, all of us can do whatever we want in life (as cliche as it sounds). So, take it in your stride and enjoy second semester senior year. I guarantee you that we will all end up at the place that is best for us. So don't analyze, dont be sad. Just do your best and have fun. That's what it comes down to. To all those accepted, congratulations!
