Final Official Early Decisions Thread

Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[] Fee Waiver Used?: No.
[] SAT I (by section): CR760, M780, W780.
[] SAT IIs: Biology 730; Chinese 800; Physics 800; Math 800.
[] GPA, Weighted and Unweighted: Weighted 3.62; Unweighted not sure (3.8-3.9 probably);
[] Rank: No rank. If counselor filled out %: top 5%.
[] ACT: N/A;
[] APs (including this year's): 2006: Micro-econ. 5; Macro-econ. 4; 2007: Art History 5; US History 4; Calculus AB 5; Physics B 5; Eng. Lang. 5; Studio Art-Drawing 5. Currently taking Calc. BC, Chem, Eng. Lit., Gov and French.
[] IBs (including this year's: N/A;
[] Senior Yr Courseload: Most rigorous;
[] Number of Apps from Your School: Just me for early;
[] Other stats (Awards, etc.): AP National Scholar, National Merit Sch. Semi-finalist, Model UN award (yeah not very impressive :P)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Art, theater set design, newspaper layout editor, Model UN/Congress, alt. student representative to the Board of Ed., Student Advisory Council, student council, volunteering (UN), science league.
[] Job/Work Experience: Part-time job at the library (exciting, right?)
[] Essays (subject and responses): 1. My personal views on architecture as a field and a way to influence the world, as well as its relationship to my multicultural background and the socioeconomic development of China; 2. Carpentry :D
[] Teacher Recs: One was from an English teacher who sent many students to top schools and who really likes and knows me. Other one was from a physics teacher who seems to like me but doesn't know me that well. (Also see hook)
[] Counselor Rec: New counselor this year. She doesn't know me at all, but seems to have worked hard on the rec.
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): On-Campus during August. Student interviewer. We talked about architecture, how to change the world, theater, etc. It was fun but not as good as some other interviews. I think I impressed/scared him with my creepy enthusiasm, though.
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): Architecture. I went to the Cornell Summer College for architecture (a notably intense program, although not at all selective) and got a -perfect- evaluation from the professors. I had architectural as well as fairly good art work in my supplementary portfolio and tied my extra-curricular activities (set crew, art) to architecture. Also I guess my UN volunteering experience sounds somewhat interesting, but I didn't focus on that. Lastly, I took several AP tests that weren't offered in my school and that I studied for and aced independently.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: New Jersey.
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Public. About 100-110 in each class. We sent about 15 to top schools last year, but they were exceptional. Middle class district.
[] Ethnicity: Chinese (and wrote about it in my essay).
[] Gender: Female.
[] Income Bracket: $80,000 ish.
[] Strengths: Ambition in architecture? Also academically satisfactory, sort of.
[] Weaknesses: Not interesting :P No cool extra-curricular activities or even any notable awards.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I think my architecture obsession separated me from other applicants. Although many others have far more interesting extra-curricular activities, exhibit greater leadership and excel academically, I might have seemed different because not too many people are really fanatic about things like architecture or art history, especially not from a humanist + humanitarian perspective.
[/ul]Other Factors: Nothing really...
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I feel incredibly fortunate =) Good luck to everyone else, regardless of the decision you received.

Edit: Just read some of the other "accepted" posts; you're all so much more awesome than I am. Congratulations!

[] Job/Work Experience: worked in various jobs: coffeeshops, distributed flyers, did an internship, and so on
[] Essays (subject and responses): great...the ones who read it said it was excellent - I connected it to my extracurriculars, and I think it is important to use the essays as an outlet for your passion as well as a means to tie up the entire application..i feel that my essays connected all of the points I had made through ecs, awards and so on..
[] Teacher Recs: havent read them...
[] Counselor Rec: it was written by my history teacher, who is awesome and really smart, so I think it was very poignant (also asked a rec from the consulate where I interned for two months, and they ranked me at the top 10% of all interns they ever had)
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): it was quite the experience...i admire my interviewer, and it was the most fun i've had talking to sb in ages. i had said to myself that even if I got rejected or deferred, the interview would have been something to remember and treasure
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.):none
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]

[] Ethnicity: Greek
[] Gender:Male

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):none
[] Strengths:ecs..SATs were NOT stellar, but again, it shows that it is not a great factor
[] Weaknesses: ^^
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: dunno...i'd say a combo of essays, recs (i also included a rec from the greek consulate, where I interned in the summer)[/li][/ul]
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: congrats to all! all those of you deferred, don't worry..it was more than 3000 deferred and only about 800 accepted..i feel it was due to the fact that EA admissions went up 36%..those of you who are Bulldogs, see you!!!!! :)

Congratulations to those admitted in the early round. I was asked by PM to comment about what the numbers mean (but what do I know?). In general, at most of the colleges that have an early admission round that is nonbinding, that is "early action," the plurality result for early round applications is deferral to the regular round. That's the best the college can do. No college wants to fill its whole class only with early round applicants (although many colleges with binding early decision fill up as much as half the enrolled class that way). No college wants to give up too early on a student who showed, by applying in the early round, some sincere interest in that college. So most colleges resolve cases that aren't clear at this time of year by deferring the applications to the regular round. Quite a few applicants who are deferred will end up admitted at their early round college(s). All those deferred applicants should be sure to apply somewhere else during the regular round--and that deadline is comign up soon at most colleges.

That's all I know. Good luck. Congratulations to those who are in, and best wishes to everyone still trying to get in somewhere. There are a lot of good possibilities for everybody.

I'll post stats in 3.5 months, I guess. When I have an actual answer...

chronicidal:

After reading your stats I dont feel bad. I am asian female. ACT 34 and perfect GPA, class rank 1/463. Super rec, okay EC. SATII 800, 750, 730 for Math, chem and spanish. I was deferred. But, I dont understand how you got deferred with such spectacular stats.

These are my friend's stats. He isn't on CC, but he's the only other person from my school applying anywhere difficult this year.

I had to get a friend to talk me into actually checking because I was so petrified, but I'm so glad I did, of course :D

[] Teacher Recs: Very Good I thought
[] Counselor Rec: Very Good
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): Decent
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.):
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Colorado
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Charter School (#62 of top 100)
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $200k+
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[] Strengths: None
[] Weaknesses: I'm not God. Apparently that is what it takes.
[li] Why you think you were deferred: I felt like I had pretty solid test scores and GPA, but I wasn't president of my class; I didn't have legacy; I wasn't URM; I wasn't first generation. I'm generally well-rounded, but not a D1 athlete. Like I said..I wasn't God and apparently that's what it takes.[/li][/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I am definitely a little bit bitter. I was very sad at first when I saw that I had gotten deferred, but I'm realizing that it's not that big of a deal. I could still get in. I'm still a person. I'm still a person with hopes, dreams, desires, and friends....most of all friends. I knew there was an 80% chance I'd feel like crap and a 20% chance I'd feel ecstatic today... I kind of dreaded checking all day. I'm not going to lie..I felt like I deserved to get in. I worked my ass off and sacrificed a lot for my studies over the past 3 years... but so did so many other people. Congratulations all... at least some people got accepted...It's not impossible.
