Final Opinion for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

I applied for Architectural Engineering, which is in the college of architecture. Last year, Cal Poly SLO accepted only 27% of applicants to this college. Because I am OUT OF STATE (texas) , what do you guys think are my chances at SLO?

College of Architecture Stats:
gpa: 3.95
SAT: 1269

My Stats:
Unweighted GPA: 3.74
Cal Poly GPA: 4.04
SAT I: 1410 (best combined), 1380 (best single)

Classes (including senior year):
6 semesters in social sciences
10 semesters of english (including sat II for 2 semesters credit)
14 semesters of math (including 7th and 8th grade algebra and geometry, and sat II math)
10 semesters of science (including sat II for 2 semesters credit)
8 semesters of spanish
6 semesters of music

Breakdown:
Soph: 2.5 honors classes
Junior: 2 honors classes, 1 AP
Senior: 3 AP

bump.......

In...for sure...states (csu's) are purely a number game and if you're that much above on the SAT score and a little above on the GPA I' say you're in. You have to remember, those are averages of the people they let in. To get an average you have to have some people above and some people below those numbers which means you're probably in.

bump.........

The architecture category usually consists of the most selective majors there....... so it's not always a guarantee for admission. The admission process is generally more points based and focuses less on ECs, and seeing as you are out of state and your stats are much higher than the averages, you should have a good to very good chance. Anything can still happen though.

I did however, know of someone last year who had a 4.1 GPA, 1540 SAT (as well as a 5 on the AP Comp. Sci. test), took mostly honors/AP classes, few ECs and was rejected from SLO as a CS major. Keep your fingers crossed on this come Feb-March.

Speaking of average SAT scores, 50% of the accepted applicants scored higher, and 50% scored lower than that......... in which you get that 1269 average.

so If I changed my major to engineering, which has a 50 percent acceptance rate.....I should absolutely be in?

I am thinking about calling and changing my first-choice major to civil engineering. Should I just stay with architectural enigneering or definitely change? Remember I am out of state (my stats at the top).

engineering averages:
gpa: 3.88
SAT: 1281
Accepted: 51%

architecture averages (arch. eng.)
gpa: 3.95
SAT: 1269
accepted: 27%

First off, I don't think you can change majors after submitting the application. When I visited this summer I clearly remember the admissions lady saying once you press that submit button nothing can be changed, even if you put a wrong grade in or something. Secondly, your stats are awesome, so I wouldn't worry about getting in!! Good luck...

bump.......

When I called Cal Poly, the guy said that as soon as my application is downloaded into the system, I can email the admissions staff and request the change of major. He said it would not be a problem to change majors.

05senior,
go back to ur duke post..I had a question

go cal poly....anybody else on my chances?

Good chance. Your personal averages are cleary above Cal Poly's medians. However, the acceptance rate is so low, you really can't be sure. I'd go with architecture if that's what you're interested in, though.

yeap, i think you have a good chance getting in too based on your stats, i got a low test score (ACT 23) but a pretty high GPA (4.25 this GPA was calculated by the CSU cal poly application) and i got in as ED, so yea...as long as they balance, i think it's okay, good luck!

congrats, but what was your major, and are you in california or out-of-state?

thanks..my major is materials engineering and i'm in california

yeah well im gonna try to switch it on the app and make civil engineering make first choice major (not architectural engineering)

ohh okay..go with the one you're really interested in, good luck!

you know what was weird on my app? the gpa it had filled in for me on the grades and classes page was LOWER than what it was when i manually calculated it...lucky i decided to do that i guess.

ohh really..umm that's weird..mine is the opposite...
