Recommendations and Interviews:
Excellent recommendations from all teachers, coaches, and tutors. Recommendations from (depending on what the school requests): honors geometry teacher, English teacher, science teacher, French teacher, recent writing tutor, fencing instructor, sixth grade teacher that I assist, who also taught me.
Good interviews. Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, Concord, Milton, and St. Mark?s were all on-campus with an adcom; St. Paul?s and Groton by phone with an adcom. St. Mark?s and Exeter were definitely were and I think Andover, Milton, and St. Paul?s with the Director of Admission. Andover, Milton, and St. Mark?s went exceptionally well; Concord and Deerfield went well, but not as well as the others.

Edit: applied for 10th grade

Pretty...what grade are you currently?

My son...only applied to one school, and not one of the so-called "top" schools (although, we consider it incredible and chose not to apply anywhere else after my older son's wonderful experience)...NMH

His stats -

Reapplying as a ninth grader (admitted last year without fa)

Through middle school straight A's/A+'s (in our district 4.33 for A+....but I guess you could say 4.0 average)

Received "academic achievement award" given to top 10 in class of 200 students.

"Student of the Month" every month all four years.

Plays piano, cello, guitar; participated in school strings ensemble.

Participated three years in local council for the arts modern dance program; named to select group two years.

Local theater group for two years of middle school

Peer mediation.

Student council

UCC Youth Group; local community service and yearly overseas service trips

Basketball - played middle school "A" Team grades 7 & 8 (a really low-level sport at our school)

Baseball - played middle school team grades 6-8; club ball and All-Star teams past 4 years. Named to "Who's Who in Youth Baseball" past two years.

Soccer - played middle school team grades 6-8. Led team to first ever undefeated season in grade 8 scoring or assisting all goals. Only freshman to make hs varsity team. Club soccer for past 9 years. Currently plays for regional premier team which made it to Nationals this past year. Starting forward. Also ODP state team past three years.

This Year (grade 9):
Honors Algebra 2
Honors Earth Science
Honors Geometry
Honors Freshman English
Spanish I
Spanish II
Eastern & Western World Heritage (standard required humanities class)

Ran into trouble in Honors Alg II (C ouch) after poor 8th grade Honors Alg I instruction (got an A, but didn't really learn everything). Also injury/subsequent surgery at start of school year made maintaining grade in this class difficult. All other grades A/A+ with current B+ in Honors English.

Ethnicity: Caucasian

Excellent Recs; only sent what was asked for - english, math, and one personal. I'm sure his interview went very well; he is articulate and personable.

SSAT's 85% (math was an issue, as I said above the middle school math program left something to be desired)....I doubt this would have hurt him at one of the big schools. (His older brother got into Exeter five years ago with lower SSAT's and no "hook". (In but not really in....no fa). He only applied because I wanted him to apply to more than one school; he did not want to go there).

Admitted this year, full boat. (yay)

Oops, meant club baseball for 9 years (same as soccer). Also, qualified to Johns Hopkins CTY program (99th percentile on national testings), but never did take the SAT. The day we were scheduled to go was the last day that the old SAT was being administered and it was a sub-zero day. Our fuel line froze and we couldn't go! Do they use the new SAT now? At the time (two years ago), we were told they didn't know what the plan was.

When your son reapplied as a 9th grader, was he applying as a potential 10th grader as well?

No...at the time of his application last year, we weren't sure if we really wanted him to go away just yet. (He is my youngest boo-hoo). Coaches and adcom told us to go ahead and apply; if we changed our minds they suggested the most common route was to come in again as a freshman. We, including my son, were very receptive to the idea. Their program is much stronger than our local public hs, and it gives my son a chance to "erase" his injury and have an extra year in his sport.

I didn't see the recommendations, so I can't give any insight on those.

Interviews:
Choate - pretty good; interviewer didn't NOT like me, but I didn't come across as well as I wanted to ... he started giving me time limits on questions and made me feel less comfortable than I did at other schools ... I got across my enthusiasm about boarding school and previous experiences at doing well away from home. Choate asks very probing questions and expects detailed answers.... tip for future applicants! :)

Andover- great interview, managed to get across everything I wanted to ... intervierwer told my mother she didn't say this to "a lot of people", but she felt that I would be perfect there, etc. More of a conversation than interrogation. More comfortable.

Results:
Choate - Wait List
Andover - Wait List

Currently trying to get off Choate wait list... wish me luck :D

Good luck, Olivia! It's funny how my math averages went from a 94 the first term to a 92 to second term to an 84 this term. I hate trigonometric ratios...

I hate Math... but I have to try hard in it. I thought Choate would like that my average went up 8 points!!! The only reason my average was as good as an 84 the first quarter was that Mrs. Barberi didn't catch (key word) me if I didn't do my homework ... so if you do your homework every single night she averages a 100% test grade into your test average.

Each homework assignment you don't do, 10 points are taken off. (i.e. you miss one = 90% test added in to your test average)

Ahh that stinks! It's not fair because my math teacher gives us impossible tests that has junk on it that we never even went over. & another thing is that my school has classes in levels. The 3 class is what we call the "dumb" class, the 2 is a mediocre class, and the 1 class is the "nerds." Of course I'm in the 1 class and he TRIES to get through Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 in one year... & He still hasn't realized that it's impossible. Yet the other classes have tests that allow them to get 97 averages.
