Finalizing list, looking for realistic schools to add.

Hey CC, I'm getting to my final list. I don't have that many realistic colleges which I like and I am looking for suggestions.

My stats:

Profile:
•White male
•MD resident
•$300k family income, my family can afford any school, but I'd only want them to pay a lot if I love the school.

Academic:
•3.48 GPA
•3.88 weighted GPA
•4.1 GPA Junior year
•Top 15% class rank, 43/328
•1990 SAT
•1340 M + CR (670 + 670)
•6 APs, Bio: 5, USH: 4, WorldH: 4.

ECs:
Pretty good for second-tier schools. I'm a varsity athlete, coach, writer, and have had a 2 year internship at the U.S. Senate. Letters of rec will be good and essay above average.

My criteria:
•Small-medium sized. I like smaller classes and having a good relationship with professors. I'd go to a big state U if I could get into the honor's college.
•Pride in sports. I'm a huge sports fan and I'd ideally want to go to a school with good D1 sports. I could make an exception if it's in a big sports town like Boston, Philly, etc.
•In a good area, nice campus, things to do off-campus, decent climate, etc.
•Prestige doesn't matter a whole lot, but I'd like it to be known.
•I am at least above average academically.
•A nice student gym/fitness center. I will lift at least 4 times a week.

Major:
•Economics or Business Economics
•I will declare pre-health (med or dent, undecided)

My schools (this is where I need help)
•University of Miami (possible ED)
•University of MD
•University of Alabama
•Georgetown University

Thanks!

Bump .

What do you guys think about Georgia Tech? Could I get in? I know my math is low but I’m not going into engineering so that might help.

How about Syracuse in NYS?

Do you know what kind of merit aid they give to people with my stats?

It’s hard to beat UMD/Bama @ <$25k /yr.

How about Pitt’s Honors College?
(Pitt’s DivI Basketball + city has the Steelers)

Marquette and Villanova fit most of your criteria.

U Kansas would likely give you tons of merit aid and you’d get into their Honors College.*

For huge sports and nice gym facilities plus not too far away, you have Penn State, but it’s definitely not anywhere near “small to medium” :)

Consider Villanova, Lehigh, and perhaps even Fordham. Villanova and Fordham have non binding EA which is always nice.

Your stats are good enough for a handful of the ACC schools. I would just pick the ones you would consider attending and go from there. Maybe add the Big Ten or Pac 12 if you are into moving to middle america or the west coast.

I think your stats are probably a bit high for SEC schools. You don’t need to look so low, but if you are okay with sacrificing academics, you could look at those schools as well. They may not have a lot of academic prestige, but they do have decent sports programs.

I’ll look into Pitt. I’ve heard it’s a good school for pre-med. They say the requirement for honor’s college is a 1400 SAT, so I wouldn’t get into it.

Will look into Villanova too. Does anybody know how religious it is? As an atheist, I have no problem with religious people, but I don’t want it to be a big influence. If it’s not strict like at Georgetown then it won’t be a problem.

Wisconsin will probably be too cold for me. My dad took some graduate engineering classes at UW Madison and tells me it’s the coldest place he’s ever lived.

Kansas isn’t giving me any money with a 3.48, unfortunately. I just ran a NPC; their cut off is 3.5 unweighted even if my test score is top 15% at the school. Alabama on the other hand, looks at weighted GPA.

Even though we have beat Penn State only once, Maryland is better! PSU is too big for me, I’d rather go to UMD.

ACC schools: I love UMiami, FSU would be nice if I got into the honor’s college (average 1970 SAT and 4.2 GPA by petition), still wondering about Georgia Tech, Maryland is good, Pitt is good, and I have legacy (mom, master’s) at Virginia Tech.

I’d like to stay on the east coast or in the south. Parents are not prohibitive of the west coast, but it’s obvious to me that they don’t like the idea. The midwest doesn’t really attract me. I might go to an SEC school if it gives me a lot of money, like Alabama. My ultimate goal is to become a doctor or dentist, so if going to a school where I’m very strong going in would help me do so, it’s definitely a viable option.

Bump to top of page.

Schools like Notre Dame, Georgetown, Duke, UVA or Michigan might be out of reach.

Your stats might be good enough for Boston College, UNC, Wake Forest, GA Tech. If you have decent extracurriculars you’ll have a shot as your on the cusp.

You should have a decent chance at Maryland and Miami if you really like those schools.

^I think objective stats would need to be higher for UNC OOS.

I think GT would be a bad idea for premed.

The goal is to get the highest GPA. Your premed classes would be filled with STEM students who have higher stats.

Would the GTech STEM students take the same classes as a premed?

You’re asking for a small-medium size school - I don’t believe UMD/Bama fit that description. I don’t know Syracuse financial aid, I gave a suggestion that fulfilled your criteria, the rest is up to you.

Some of the Texas mid sized privates award decent merit aid and have well attended D1 sports. SMU for instance is located in a decent part of Dallas, has a well regarded business school (no idea about Econ), and attracts pretty good, but generally not stellar students.

Baylor and TCU also have good school spirit although Baylor is still quite religious.

Note also that going to Med School will require going to grad school. It will be an uphill battle getting into the top med schools in the country from an SEC school. You’ll need to do extremely well individually in undergrad. Just something to consider.

University of Dayton - not known for football but they are for basketball. Great campus, always looking to upgrade and improve. They have incredible academics and with about 8000 students it is a perfect size in my opinion. I went to a tiny high school - about 250 in the whole school so going to a college with 25000 people would have been overwhelming to me. Dayton was a good fit for me. Yes, it was many years ago but we continue to maintain our season tickets for basketball and go back for all home games so we can see the changes and improvements.

Bama has the honor’s college which would allow me to take smaller classes. Maryland is just a good school that’s close to home, so of course I’ll apply to it. They’re both financial safeties.

Found out that Syracuse’s max merit award is $12,000. Not worth it over Miami/MD/Bama IMO, if I even got $12,000.

Do you really think that students from Bama, USC, Florida, UGA, etc. are disadvantaged in getting into medical schools? Most of them have their own medical schools and I know for a fact that they won’t look down on their own undergraduates. If one has a 3.7 GPA and 32 MCAT with solid ECs from any school, I don’t see why they couldn’t get into medical school. All US medical schools are great and getting into any of them would be a dream come true for me.
