I finally got my dad to pay for HP Pavilion tx2500z, though he wanted to get me a cheaper ThinkPad. I love ThinkPads, but this HP just seemed too good to pass up. Check it out: Buy an HP Pavilion tx2500z series notebook PC from HP

Nice, I was contemplating getting that one before I got my Dell lol
Be sure to report back on how you like it when you get it =)

Huh, I always thought Lenovo computers are generally more expensive than HPs.

Were you able to use one of those $200 or $500 coupons that have been floating around? I just got a 14.1" HP for $400 off using a coupon along with the instant rebate.

Coupons? What an outrage...haven't seen any "floating around" I just got mine with the instant rebates. It cost (after taxes, etc) 990-ish dollars.

Oh, and I'll tell you all about it once it comes in, which I'm hoping will happen in about two weeks.

Same here, I got $500 off on a dv9700t a while with a coupon code from here.

ordered a dv9700T with the $500 coupon last night too ! !

Yeah, there wasn't such a great coupon on the 12.1" tablet. They had a small coupon, but the computer wasn't configured as I wanted it. Oh, well.

When I hear about someone buying a new computer, I always think of what Dave Barry (not me) wrote about the speed of developing technology. He said that computer stores should have a big dumpster at the cash register where you could toss your just-paid-for new computer, since while you were buying it, the newer, improved model just came out.

Seems that way, doesn't it?

isn't that the truth. I really struggled with having to buy ANOTHER computer but what we had just would not work with the college tech requirements -

I spent about 2 weeks learning about all the new stuff out there )- the bottom line is the tech department said alot of their programs would not run on a 64 bit platform, so we went with a 32 OS.

Who knows what next year will bring, but I needed to deal with this year.

I wonder how many people really know what they are buying.

Thanks everyone for helping me make an informed buying choice, not to mention the coupon savings.

OLGITA - are you sure you couldn't custom configure. The coupon took us to the link and then we custom configured.

the coupon code area doesn't show up until you get ready to do a final review. I was freaking out when the coupon area didn't show up. Just be sure besure the coupon is applied before the final checkout.

It says on the coupon that you must pick that exact configuration, which didn't work for me

Got my HP today. Looks and feels great so far - haven't finished installing everything yet, but the tablet is spectacular (thanks to Wacom technology) and the design is beautiful as well. It's very artsy. One thing that some of you considering this HP might want to take into account is the size of the battery. I got an 8-cell battery, which is the largest one available. It doesn't stick out of the back (only about 1/4 inch) as much as it does at the bottom. Because of this, the computer doesn't lie flat on hard surfaces; instead, it's slightly tilted. I actually find that to be quite comfy, since all my desktop keyboards are also tilted, but I know some people would prefer a smaller battery.

so how long did it actually take from the time you ordered to the day you received? I believe ours was to ship yesterday - but with regular shipping I believe it says 5-7 days to arrive. I had ordered a software package from Dell which was suppose to ship in August 5 and I ended up getting it 2 days after I ordered. You just can't go by the dates they give you.

Good look with your new tablet. I think they seem really cool. i would love to get one someday but right now is is just not in the budget with d's college expenses .

I just got me a new Toshiba. Unfortunately its sitting pretty idle their since we don't have a router or cable to transfer all my old files or use the internet with yet. It too has a large battery that tilts the keyboard up a bit... it may be heavier but it also means longer battery life and more air to cool the bottom.

Sorry to say but I don't think a touchscreen is really worth it if it costs a hundred or more bucks than computers of similar specs. I have a wacom tablet that cost about $70 and it works just as good as any touchscreen. The only advantage I can think of to a touchscreen is that you don't have to carry around a separate tablet and usb cable, but I don't really care as I'm getting a bag to throw it all in anyway :P

Hmm, with the exception of the videocard, I'd prefer a Thinkpad over that any day. Thinkpads have better build quality and longer battery lives. In terms of specs, they look quite similar.

I ordered mine on the 19th, got it on the 28th.

"Thinkpads have better build quality and longer battery lives."

I agree with build quality. I have two ThinkPads that are both around 10 years old. The batteries are obviously dead, but the laptops themselves are indestructible.
As for battery life, I couldn't find one in that price range that fared better than my new HP. Plus, the screen size was a huge deal for me. I can't stand bulky laptops. It's pretty difficult to find computers with decent specs and 11-13" screens below $1000.

"Sorry to say but I don't think a touchscreen is really worth it if it costs a hundred or more bucks than computers of similar specs"

That's the thing - I couldn't find a computer with similar specs (including screen size and battery life) in my price range. And a touchscreen is most definitely worth it, since I hate carrying around extra tech clutter in my bag. Besides, I can't really imagine where I'd find space on those tiny lecture hall desks to fit a laptop AND a tablet for taking notes.

And another update - I personalized handwriting recognition on my HP today (I had to write out 50 sentences), and it works extremely well now. It recognizes 95% of my cursive, and my cursive is a messy thing. Even I don't recognize 95% of my cursive :) It's supposed to get even better if I provide more writing samples, which I intend to do later this week.

Well good luck with the tablet then. I'll be wondering if I should go with digital handwriting or audio transcribing for my notes.
