I heard the are mailing the letters depending on when te information was submitted.

My question is: Would they meet an scholarship from a fellow college?

I received 25k from RPI, but I don't think CMU will give me as much...

How does the process work? I want more $$ from CMU

If you get a better offer elsewhere than from CMU, you can request a review - call the Admin office and tell them you'd like to "request a review of your financial aid package" - they will send you a form. It specifically says "we would like the opportunity to evaluate your competing offers and to respond, within the limits of our budget." They may not quite match the schools they consider their peer institutions - http://www.cmu.edu/ira/peer_institutions.htm - but could come back with an improved offer. You may want to talk to the finaid people directly to make sure they get your info; also be prepared to move quickly (i.e. fax as well as mail info) if your decision depends on their response.

I take it that this only works for financial aid offers? In other words, if my son received merit scholarships at peer institutions but nothing from CMU, would they review this?

In our case the other peer institution found some financial need which CMU hadn't but it wasn't strictly merit, no.

I had a purely merit offer from another school, and CMU reviewed it and gave me some merit money (still less than the other school). Your luck will vary, depending on what major, high school stats, what school the offer is from, and CMU's needed demographics.

i am a applicant for MS in chemical engineering in cmu. i just get the admission without any finacial aid. i also get a merit offer from umass for PhD. is it possible that i told the cmu and cmu will consider givine me some merit money? though i prepare to go to cmu more.

PhD? Are you a graduate student or an undergraduate student?

Hi, KrazyKow! Did you work through Admissions to ask for them to consider merit aid or the Financial Aid office? We haven't filed any FA documents, so I imagine the FA office wouldn't be the one involved.

I think that when I got my fin aid packet there was a form that we filled out and sent in... I imagine that even if you didn't file any documents, you'll probably get something saying that you would owe CMU a ridiculous amount of money, and some information on loans.

I received my financial package and it's quite disappointing compared to other colleges... For example, for RPI I have 35,000 in grants and loans...

Does anybody know how well does the appeal process work? It says that 265 out of 585 were successful and the average increase was $4,065

Besides filling the form given what else should I do to increase my financial pack?

Elizabeth_Cl, my son is in same situation as you. Got a generous financial aid package from RPI and disappointing one from CMU. Has already sent in a request to CMU for a re-evaluation of his FA package. He attached copies of his financial aid packages from RPI, Georgia Tech and Lehigh. We will see what happens. From what I read on the threads here I am not sure he can be too hopeful about receiving a lot more gift aid from CMU. But it is worth the effort to try.
