Hey guys,
I’m currently an accounting and finance major at a reputable state business school, 3.87 gpa, and I am set on going down the CPA route, but I am also considering doing a finance internship. I got a notification on my LinkedIn feed about a possible position at Morgan Stanley in my city, and I am interested. Would this type of internship be advantageous or detrimental to me getting another accounting job down the road? Would it make my work experience look too unfocused? I might want to work in a finance-related job down the road. I would appreciate some advice from someone in a similar situation.
Go for it and also look at summer credit analyst internships at bigger banks in your city. Seek out accounting internships, too. It takes several applications to get an opportunity, unless you have a direct contact. When do you graduate?
Finance internships are GREAT for accounting students as you will get solid experience working with real financial statements (at a bank -credit analysis or investment banking). Will actually give you experience in the Transactions Services area which is big business for the Big 4 (a separate practice than their audit business). Some kids try to specialize in that area.
If that interests you, timing is great. This summer get financial experience, next summer get an internship with Big 4 or regional firm, perhaps with some transaction exposure, and you’re off to the races!
