Finance Major: BU vs CUNY Baruch (which is better?)

BU SMG (Boston University School of Management) vs CUNY Baruch Zicklin's School of Business in New York

Which has a better job prospective? career.... I'm thinking of going into I-banking or becoming a financial analyst. Which school would provide a better opportunity?

If you are instate for Baruch, I would take Baruch in a heat beat! Why? Both will frankly be about equal for job propects given the same overall graduation GPA. Baruch, however, is probably one-sixth the price of BU as an instate student. In addition, if you want to work in NY, where many of the finance jobs are located, Baruch probably has more connections in NY than BU due to its NY vacinity and strong alumni base. Its only drawback is its lack of true college experience.

Very true. Thank you.

Anybody got anymore suggestions?

BU what a rip off.

Sorry does that mean BU would be your choice? or BU is a ripoff? lol

BU is a ripoff, I wouldn't choose it. It's placement isn't anything spectacular, in fact I'm not even sure their business program is even great.

Thanks Dawgie.

Anyone care to throw in their 10 cents ?

Listen up: Baruch is a surprisingly good school with a long term track record and plenty of connected alumni. In addition, the the price that they charge, they are a steal. Yes, you don't get the normal college experience that you could get at BU. However, you will spend less than half the price too.

Right now (before college/freshmen) you won't care too much about cost, unless your parents are paying for it all. But after you graduate and you will have all these loans to pay off. You'll be regretting paying 40kish a year for a school like Bentley or BU, which don't have spectacular job placement for finance jobs. The only schools worth paying this much are top schools: Ivy League, NYU, UMich, and etc.

Dawgie, I agree ! I'm thinking about attending Baruch for a whole year, complete the courses necessary for NYU Stern, and hopefully I can try to transfer there, despite how difficult it is. I can still try...

Do you think that's a good idea?

Yup it's a great idea. It won't be that difficult, I'm pull off a 3.7+ in simple general education or basic courses. You should be able to get in I think.

Dawgie, do you go to Baruch ?

I would go to BU. For a few reasons, its college life and experience is far far far better then at Baruch. Its like the same 4 years, another 4 years of High School. A lot of people from Baruch ends up transferring to a SUNY after a year.
Also, BU has a higher average starting salary.
If you went to a public high school in New York City then you are meeting the same type of people. BU has more international exposure and you will meet people from around the country.

This is just what I think, hope it helps.

DHJetsFan423 notes,"BU has a higher average starting salary"

Response: Oh, where did you get this information?

Undergrad - BSchools

It shows that it's a little over $49,000. Baruch probably isn't even close to that.

Boston University was in dire straits a few decades ago and John Silber came in to rescue it. But it's a place where you get your degree and then move on. If you really want an urban setting at a big private university, then it might be for you. I got my MSCS there in 1995.

Thx for the responses. I am still deciding and it's been about 2 months now ... I still dont know my decision .

What if I'm trying to transfer to NYU after my freshman year? BU has a really good college experience, but i want to stay for my family , i think it will change a lot once I leave , and i would rather stay 4 years at a college near my home to be with my family.

How is BU ranked in terms of business at SMG? finance especially... is it considered prestiguous or a typical education?

bump 10char)))

Average salary isn't a good reason to deny a school......Baruch and BU have a Large student body thus there will be extreme lows and highs....however that doesnt represent a student with drive and one who will study and get a good GPA (3.5+) personally I know of a few from Baruch that recieved much more than 49K

That average salary statistic for school is 100% meaningless. You should only worry about it, if you consider yourself average.
