Finance major, physics minor?

Hello all,
So I am seriously considering investment banking, the issue is my b-school isn’t ranked all that high (think 40-60 range) but I’ve heard of plenty of graduates landing jobs on Wall Street.

back when I was in hs I considered becoming an engineer, so I took ap physics and ap calc to prepare, both of which I did moderately well in. I was thinking about minoring I physics for two reasons particularly:

  1. Set me apart
  2. Show I have quantitative skills.

Is this a good plan? Will this make me appear as a better candidate for JPM or Morgan Stanley? Or should I double major in another business related field.

Thanks all!

I think its fine, though double majoring with physics would be best. Check out Wall Street Oasis, it’s a forum that would really help you out

You have a shot with what you are suggesting, ie finance and physics. But you need to maintain a high GPA and be involved in some things outside of the classroom.

JPM recruits at the, non-target, state school I work for. They recruit for back office. They look for high GPA (3.3 or higher) and well rounded students.

My D1 went to a target school and got an internship, front office in trading ( her choice) at JPM the summer before her senior year. After the internship, she was offered a job. She also had an internship at Goldman Sachs, in Global Compliance, the summer before her junior year. At that time she was planning to go to law school. But her GS experience made her interested in front office finance. She had a very high GPA and interesting and varied outside activities. She also minored in IT.

So it is possible for you. But you have to make yourself stand out.

What kind of job in finance are you looking for? Investment banking, operations, or selling things (aka brokerage).

tbh, investment banking is a brand name and prestige business. Its about what school you went to and who you know. Or what sport you played at the NCAA level. Your best bet is to have and make the right friends and come from the top ranking school. Your major only matters on the margins.

Given that private equity and hedge funds don’t go to fresh college grads unless from Ivy League, if you’re not looking at iBanking, you’re not gonna have any job search security at all. Ops not only make little money, and sales is cold calling (or gambling). I once tried to get into finance. Don’t waste your time. If I wanted to be dick, I’d egg you on because then you’d be less competition for me in whatever field I did go into the future, in case you moved to that field too. But I’m being nice.
