I am currently a sophmore at UMass Lowell and am looking to transfer to a better business school for my final two or three years. I am looking at having around a 3.6 GPA (Higher in technical courses) after my two years here and am a member of a varsity sports team and I also have good ECs from here and high school also. Here are a list of schools I am highly considering for their business programs (Not in Order):

-Ohio State
-Boston College
-Michigan State
-Indiana
-Illinois
-UNC

Keep in mind that I'd like to get into the business school at each of the these schools not just general programs.

Which of these schools are looking good to accept me? Any other schools you would put on this list?

Thanks in advance

The public colleges you probably have no chance at...especially next year with the economy. I could be wrong though...I don't know how much emphasis they place on residency. Are you a resident in any of the states? The only school you have a chance at is Boston College.

Why do you say I have no chance at the public schools?

For Ohio State at least I feel I have a very good chance of getting in. I'm an international student, what does the economy have to do with me getting in?

More applications to public schools. People cannot afford to pay for private school. Pay attention to the news...

I don't know how it works with international students. But I know where I'm from (California), it is hard as h*ll to get into top public schools. Do you need financial aid? Even more tough.

I would leave off the public schools and only apply to private ones.

I'm pretty sure you can get in Ohio State, Indiana, mich state, and possibly Illinois
I'd say Boston college and UNC are your reaches.

although for Indiana you would have to see how well your courses transfer over...and it might take 5 years to graduate from Kelley because they don't take outside business credits

good luck

For example, the business programs at Boston College and Michigan State, it seems as if I will need to take at least a semester's worth of courses before I can apply to the business program. If I get into those schools, what are the chances that I get into a general program, take my classes, but then don't get into the business school?

I think my biggest fear would be going to one of the better schools on my list and then not getting into the actual business school.

I was going to transfer to Indiana from my CC in Florida, turned out money wouldn't allow.

But anyways, Indiana doesn't accept you right into the business school. You have to attend IU for a whole semester, and then apply for the business school. If you do good that semester, you'll get in is what they pretty much told me. I was looking to transfer with a 3.8 from a community college, and the admissions officers pretty much told me I was a shoe-in. So I'm sure you'll get in.

However, yeah, I'm not sure how your courses will transfer over, and they have this thing called I-Core, which is a business school pre-req, with pre-reqs itself. Definitely need to check out their webpage if you are interested.

this is where you find out how your credits transfer to IU (its really convienient) Credit Transfer Service Home: Office of Admissions ~ IU Bloomington . Here are the pre reqs for I-core, these take up a large portion of freshman and sophomore year.

ENG-W 131 Elementary Composition (if you got above a 30 on ACT section for reading section this class isn't necessary)
BUS-X 104 Business Presentations (a public speaking class could be taken instead)
BUS-X 204 Business Communications
MATH-M 118 Finite Mathematics
MATH-M 119/MATH-M 211 Brief Survey of Calculus/Calculus I (one or the other)
BUS-K 201 The Computer in Business
BUS-X 201 Technology in Business
BUS-X 220 Career Perspectives (8 week class)
BUS-A 100 Basic Accounting Skills (8 week class)
BUS-A 201 Intro to Financial Accounting
BUS-A 202 Intro to Managerial Accounting
BUS-L 201 Legal Environment of Business
BUS-G 202 Business and Economic Strategy in the Public Arena
ECON-E 201 Intro to Microeconomics
ECON-E 370 Statistical Analysis

I am at IU right now and I love it.

Thanks for the detailed response maxellis, Indiana is a school I am very interested in and I know I would enjoy it there very much. Now is I-Core the business program? Or is it what you take during the semester before the business program?

I have not taken a lot of those courses you listed, I've really only taken the accounting courses, economic courses and all the maths, plus some gen eds. So if I get in to this pre-business program will I be in it for a long time before I can actually apply to the business school? That's what it seems like...

Thanks

I-core is one semester of college that mixes marketing, strategy, operations and decisions, and finance (so you take i-core and that is it for the entire semester), and you must be admitted to the Kelley School of Business before you can take it. You can be accepted into the business program w/o taking the courses I listed in my last post, but you must take them before you take i-core (and you need i-core to graduate), and you won't get admitted to the school of business without showing that you are planning to get the required classes out of the way on time (better chance to get in if you plan to knock out requirements asap) . I am not positive how it works for transfer, but for regular students they are either a direct admit freshman (admitted to the business school from day 1), or regular admit (they apply for admission to business school after 2 or 3 semesters (if you get rejected after your first application, you can apply again next semester)). As a transfer I think you would most likely be admitted to the business school the first day you start taking classes, but they might require one semester here before you can apply. Also, there is a 27 hour gen ed req. to graduate, so the gen eds you have completed will help towards that

"As a transfer I think you would most likely be admitted to the business school the first day you start taking classes, but they might require one semester here before you can apply."

So I would have to be there for a semester first? Or can I get in right away?

And what type of cumulative GPA do you think I would need to get in? Because again, I would need to get into the business school...

Here is a website w/ info for standard admission Kelley School of Business Undergraduate 2006-2008 Online Bulletin: Undergraduate Program . It looks like you need a 3.0 + and a couple extra curriculars, and an upward trend in grades is preferable, and it is also required that you take one semester at IU before you can apply.

Thanks again maxellis, now like I said before, I will have completed my maths, accountings, and economics before transferring. I am currently in the process of picking courses for next semester and am wondering for Indiana or some of the other schools I mentioned, what would be some good general business courses to take that would come in handy and transfer to most schools?

I have spots for two more courses to take next semester, how about a course like management information systems? or a second statistics class? or something else?
