Hi. I am a freshman majoring in business administration. I have been recently trying to figure out what concentration in the business school would fit me best. These are the three of them I am considering: accounting, finance, economics. I want to point out though, that I am a US citizen who grew up in Europe and who may want to come back and work there some time in the future. Taking that into consideration what is the most flexible major out of these three that would prepare me both for the work in the US and Europe. Economics seems to be very theoretical and macro- and micro- classes I have been taking focus of course mostly on the US political, economic etc systems. When it comes to accounting I know you have to take CPA exams in order to be an accountant and I am not quite sure if they are generally accepted in Europe. Maybe I am wrong, but from what I have read and heard so far about finance major it seems to be the most practical major out of these three and I will be able to use learned skills both in US and Europe. Please correct me if I am wrong. This is even more important to me, because I am considering transferring to better university that I am in right now, and some of the schools I am considering don’t even offer finance or accounting majors. However, they do have great economics departments. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Honestly, I would advise Economics = Finance > Accounting, depending on what you want to do but accounting will most likely be very difficult to make a transition because once you get past intro. accounting courses you’ll find it becomes quite law-based which won’t do you much good when switching countries.
As for your concern of economics being heavily US based, that’s really only true typically for your intro. classes but once you move past them into upper level economic classes they become much more universal.
Also be good to note; it also depends on what school you go to and which courses you have to take for the major.
I know accountants who have worked overseas. I’d go for accounting or finance myself.
