Hello my name is Josh. I am currently a student in community college but maintaining a high GPA and I plan to transfer to University of Illinois at Chicago or Depaul University. I enjoy both finance and marketing but I am having trouble making a decision what to major in. Being that I am equally interested in both, I would prefer the field that is higher in demand and generates more income. I am curious about your opinions on each of the degrees and how to go about education and generating the most income in each. One of my concerns is also being able to open my own practice and I believe it will be easier to do that in the finance field. Please share your opinions and suggestions. Thank you

Finance definitely could lead you to a higher salary *if you could get into investment banking. However, I do know know a lot of people who graduated with finance degree cannot find a finance-related job. I think it’s really depends on the reputation of your school, your GPA, and your intern experiences. For marketing, I cannot really say anything, because I don’t know much about. Yet, I still think it’s easier to get a job with finance degree rather than marketing.

Thank you, I have heard that marketing can generate higher salary because it is the driver of revenue but this is why I posted the thread to find more opinions.

You might have a higher salary initially in sales. But, your upward mobility is fairly minimal relative to other business disciplines.

Both majors are marketable and very useful for many fields. Consider looking into which major will teach you more skills. In terms of the field of marketing, it seems like most marketing jobs don’t over emphasize a specific degree or education in marketing, like finance jobs might. With that said, maybe a finance education may be marketable in the long run?

Thank you this is all good. I have looked into the education required for each major at UIC. They both seem interesting and focus strictly on their core. Another concern I am taking into consideration is travel. I feel with a lot of marketing jobs, a lot of travel is required. I consider myself a family man and would not want to have to travel frequently.
