Finance or MIS at UT Austin McCombs

Hey Guys,

I am approaching closer and closer to the time when I can declare my specialty for my business degree and I would like to start it right. I have narrowed it down to either Finance or MIS but I can't major in both because we can't double major within the business school. The thing is I have been really interested in investing, stocks, and things of that nature which attracts me to finance but at the same time I have always been fascinated by technology, computers, and data mining which attracts me to MIS. Which program would have the better benefits at McCombs and which program is better overall?

No one can really answer this but you. I was in this exact same position (at UT) not long ago at all.

They’re both good, but generally bring different opportunities. Finance majors go into investment banking, commercial banking, F500 corporate finance, etc. A lot of the MIS majors go into IT consulting at firms like Accenture and Capgemini.

With the ways things are today in the business world it sounds like MIS would be more promising as there is an agressive shift towards technology. Finance is still a good career, but it seems much hard to crack your way into. However, you could also go back to school and earn a master’s degree in the other after some time if you really want to do both.
I mean it is really that depends on you in what you feel is best for your future, but either way they have good outlooks.

Have you looked into which firms hire at your school and for what positions? I went to a non target school and majored in finance. Investment banks (Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley) DID recruit at my school, but only for the worst positions that Harvard and Yale grads didn’t want.

If you have the tech talent do the IT concentration. Any really good job in finance requires a MBA. Whichever way you go, try to take at least one more class in the other subject.
